Hi Everyone,
It's nice to find an Australian astronomy forum. Must admit I did find it while looking for a more informative site about the lunar eclipse, which btw was fantastic :stargaze:
Hope to chat some more soon and learn more about the stars. I have a four year old son who is full of questions. My earliest memories with my father was going to Mt Victoria in NSW to look at the heavens with a university group - he did a unit on astronomy. At least dad could answer some of my 1 million questions or at least with the help of the professors ;)
TTYS!

Hi Starbuck
Welcome to IIS - it's great to have another Brisbanite in the community. They’re a friendly bunch of folks here; some probably also have 4 year old sons so if he has any difficult questions, ask away and I'm certain that the mums and dads will help with the answers!
Cheers

Welcome to IIS, great to have you onboard.
What sort of equipment do you have?
Are you a member of any of the local clubs up there? There's quite a few IIS'ers that get together each new moon.

Thanx for the welcome. I'm a little embarrassed about equipment. All I have is a teenie monocular telescope we carry around especially for when we go camping and a planisphere night sky chart from Aust Geo shop!
Actually, I did see a group near us observing the eclipse. How do I find my nearest club?

Welcome Starbuck.
There are a number of clubs listed on the Qld Astrofest website (http://www.qldastrofest.org.au/). They are all sure to have websites or phone numbers in the phonebook. Or you could just join us on the Sunshine Coast each new moon at Astroron's place near Kenilworth. Keep an eye on the Star Party and Observing Sessions forum. Unfortunately there won't be one on the next new moon as the Barambah Darksky Camp is on that weekend. Check the SP and OS forum for more details.

Starbuck you are of course more than welcome to join us (myself, Paul aka 1ponders, Ron aka astroron, etc etc) at the Barambah Dark Sky Camp next weekend (Friday 7th to Sunday 9th September).
It would be a great opportunity to meet other SE Qld IceInSpace'ers, see some different types of telescope and mount options, and have a look through them while we show you some of the heavenly sights, and enjoy a single night (either Friday or Saturday) or a whole weekend away!
Plenty of details here http://www.darkskycamp.org.au/
or send an email via the website.
(Feel free to pm me too if you've got any questions)
If we don't see you there hopefully we may see you at one of the monthly gatherings at Ron's place west of Maleny.
Cheers!
