This is amazing. While imaging the lunar eclipse on Tuesday an aircraft flew straight across the Moon.
What are the chances of having an aircraft cross the moon, during an eclipse, and then having the luck (or skill??) to press the shutter at just the right moment? I think I've used up my quota of good luck for the year!

Shutter speed was 1/1600s, so the plane is frozen in flight. There is just a small amount of motion blur on the props. The hot engine exhaust causes some optical distortion on the edge of the Moon at about the eleven o'clock position.

Cheers!

Rob, what i like best about your pic, apart from the obvious aesthetic appeal of the image, is the plane exhaust shimmering across the moons limb.Gives a great ense of depth, movement & speed.

Actually Rob, your pic has an illusionary feel to it. It's obvious the plane is flying over & away from you but if you relax your eyes it can appear to be either flying away from you with you looking up at it....or....it can be flying towards you with you looking down upon it....get what i mean?

Yes, it is confusing, a bit like an Escher drawing.:) It even caused some head-scratching among my fellow observers that evening, and they actually watched the plane fly overhead!

Cheers,

Rob
