I have a Nikon D50 with both 18-55mm and 55-200mm lens' and would like to know what the recommended settings are and any need-to-knows for quality images of the moon and later on - planets and deep sky objects ..
Thanks!

If the moons full, try a shutter speed of around 250 sec, bracket about 4 pics, say, from f3.5-f4-f5.6-f8-f11 & try an iso of about 200. white balance to automatic & if you have it, spot metering. These settings will get you off & running.Try some tests & delete the ones you're not happy with.
A crescent or gibbous moon will require different settings possilbly a tripod

i found on my 400D that at full or near full moon, a shutter speed of 1/1000, @ ISO100 @ f8, gave some nice shots. that was a focal length of 260mm.
but play around with it mate, you'll find setting that work for you and your camera.
