What would be recommended (and still available) to meet these criteria.

New would be great  but I accept second hand ;)
USB1 or serial or parallel port connection
Runs on Windoze 98 with only 64 meg of ram
Mono/colour (prefer mono) CCD/CMOS with small to medium format (6mm-12mm though larger would be great)
gain near unity or lower (0.5e-/ADU)
Not necessarily cooled. (not being used for "pretty" imaging" but cooled would be nice)
Max exposure 30-60sec (longer would be fine)

now the crunch.....

for a couple of hundred bucks.

Come on...make my day :D

ToUcam 900nc.

You can get mono replacement chips for the ToUcam, if you really want mono.

Do you mean a modded one?
The chip is probably a bit small in a ToUcam, but it might work. Will it run on 64 meg?

No, not a modded one. You can get a repacement B&W chip for a normal ToUcam.

64meg, I dunno. I think you'll be struggling with anything.

DSI needs min 98 mb Ram, I have used it with 256 and USB1 it is still abit dodgy.

My genesis CCD which is a version of the Audine camera runs on an old win98 P233 with no problem. It is just a bit more expensive. An second hand ST7 parallel version might be just what is needed. Fits the bill perfectly

Lots of the older SBIG parallel cameras would be suitable, they often pop up for sale second hand around the place. For example, ST 237a, ST7's, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if there are Starlight Xpress ones that are suitable too, the older 512xSomething chip ones.

Model numbers/names escape me right now sorry, but there's lots of cameras from that era.

Roger.
