Lagoon in Ha

Hi all, here is the Lagoon nebula in Ha from last Saturday night.

Images were 15 second subs x 60 in Ha with the DSI II Pro and the LX200R 12" in Alt/Az

The first is raw and unprocessed and the second is a processed version in which I adjusted the levels to what looked good to me. I think it may be overdone a bit in the core. Processing was done with MaximDL.

A lot of this is still uncharted territory for me so all opinions/advice is gratefully received.

Great work Ric. Your Ha imaging technique is coming along nicely. I note that the image on the right has a black border around the frame. This looks like it was generated when the images (subs) were drizzled or registered. Make sure you crop this out before you start processing the image as the this will affect what you see in the histogram (because the black framing becomes the black point instead of the real image background). Not sure if I've made sense. Let me know if you need a better explanation.

The lagoon has quite a vast dynamic range so lends itself to MaximDL's DDP function. I preferred not to sharpen the image as part of the DDP process. Note by default the function will sharpen the image. If you want to disable DDP sharpening enter the DDP dialogue box (see attachments) and create a filter as shown. This will disable the sharpening function. Of course you may choose to keep sharpening enabled, but I prefer to use other tools for sharpening such as deconvolution or contrast improvement masks.

Thanks Jase for the tips and the attachments, I know exactly what you mean, I thought I had got all of the black border but I had my yearly Diabetes eye test earlier on today and the drops they use really muck up your vision and perception. I'm not looking for an excuse but it probably didn't help. I'll have another play tomorrow and see what I can come up with.
