I've been waiting for that one! I've always liked the old version and nabbed a copy on dvd... and I love the book, of course! However, I'm prepared to be disappointed... hoping for the best but expecting the worst!

The album is a long-favourite of mine. Picked it up in the 80s as the double LP, and then a year ago found it on CD. I even did an evening's observing with it in the background once at the ASNSW's dark site Wiruna.
It'll be interesting to see how the movie treats the topic this time around (I've seen the original movie twice). Either way, always nice to see a blockbuster sci-fi film doing the rounds.

Just out of curiousity, I went to the HMV website (www.hmv.com.au). They have the CD listed there. Grab it while you can!

there was no budget on this movie so I hope it will be a visual feast. I loved the first movie and knowing my love of all things alien I'll love this one too.BTW still haven't seen an alien movie that comes close to ET.
Thats my two bob's worth ; )

You have good taste Beren. War of the Worlds was way ahead of its time.
Looking forward to that remake on the 29th. :2thumbs: :2thumbs:

I usually don't like re-makes. I'm an original buff.
I also preferred the old movie about the Radio-play of the War of the Worlds over the old movie of the actual War of the Worlds. But still I loved them both.
I hope the new one is just as good if not better.

lol Bewitched! I hope you enjoy that one stuart! :)
I just got the chance last night to catch the premiere of War Of The Worlds' and as someone, like most of you, who enjoyed the original George Pal production with Gene Barry, was a little worried the new Spielberg epic might be a bit of a let down .... most remakes usually are, probably because we expect something exactly like the original with the newer hyped effects.
Well, what a surprise! It was fantastic. better than I'd ever hoped for. One of my hobbies is collecting old Sci-Fi movies and TV series and one does get a little stuck on original productions.
Look, do yourself a favour, catch this if you can. I thought the whole thing ran close to the original storyline BUT the special effects were mindblowing! Well, to me at least. Add to this the strong dramatic soundtrack and this comes up a winner!
The tension is all there as is the 'fright factor' - although this is NOT a scary film .. it's more the tension, there's enough going on all the time to keep you staring at the screen.
Anyway, hope you enjoy it as much as I did. All the best.

We went to the camp last night to see the Milkey Way away from all the lights.
It was realy Awsome.
G'day 'Little Dragon'
Thanks for the reply. Ok, I see your problem. It might be awhile before it comes out on DVD but the wait will be worthwhile.
As I said, I think the movie was very well done and had all the ingredients of a top sci-fi drama. Hope you like it too.
All the best and keep lookin' at the skies, OK?

I saw the film too, it was great!!!!!!
Little Dragon, there were some kids your age in the cinema as well, but it was a bit scary for little ones, even I jumped a few times and I'm old....
Still can't beat "The Day the Earth Stood Still".
Or "The Raven" (Horror)

I got to see it on Sunday. It is a fantastic film. As Dave said, much better than I ever dared hope. I remember reading the original story when I was a kid and the image of the tripods has always haunted me. The George Pal version (which I have on DVD and love) dispensed with the tripods and had the aliens running around in space ships. But Spielberg brought them back! There is one memorable scene involving a ferry, giving nothing away, where an enormous tripod appears on a hilltop... it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. His handling of the 'Red Weed' is particularly horrifying. And there was something very chilling for me with his use of the crows at the end... enough said...
All in all I thought the 'updating' of the original was brilliant, even the extra bits such as the idea that they'd been here for thousands of years, just waiting for the right time. And the 'explanation' on the video footage of the CBS news crew about how the aliens used the lightning to 'board' their craft was well done and credible, although you might have to watch carefully to get it - watch out for that bit!
I was initially concerned about Tom Cruise playing the lead, but he managed to convince me. Despite all the hype, he is actually a very good actor, and it was good to see him play a part that wasn't the usual Hollywood gung-ho yanky hero.
It's a very gritty film and disturbingly realistic. That's undoubtedly one of the reasons why it succeeds. I think Peter Jackson turned the tide on the fantasy/sf genre by insisting that his Lord of the Rings be treated as 'real history', taking Tolkien's approach that fantasy worlds must be 'true to their own inner laws' in order for the audience to engage in that 'willing suspension of disbelief'. Maybe other film-makers have taken note.
Speaking of Jackson, they showed the shorts for his King Kong due for release in December... looking good!
If you like science fiction, particularly 'earth-based' science fiction, or if you just want to see a thinking man's disaster flick, you will like this film. Not too many films are worth every cent of the admission fee. This one is. :2thumbs:

Hey Wayne,
It was brilliant wasn't it?
The only bit that really stressed me out was the girl screaming, it went right through me. Just like fingernails on a blackboard.....
Have you noticed how many re-makes are being made? Have they run out of ideas?

Maybe so we don't break the law ;)?
I enjoyed it too, the tripods were just plain cool. I agree with Mike about the girl screaming... it went straight to my brain and settled in there, like something eating away at the base of it.
When they were hiding in the basement with the ex-ambulance guy and the scanner-thing came down, I completely tensed up.
Was pretty cool because I didn't expect much from it. Definately a winner in my book.
Before replying to your post I decided to check how old you are. Ahh, 14. I will say no more, at least not for a few years.

Bah! I don't have the money to go to the movies, they charge way too much...
$10 for a student ticket... you try paying that much of a budget...

I'd rather pay the $10 on a student ticket than pay a hefty fine for downloading the file illegally. Don't think it's anonymous, it's INCREDIBLY easy to track you by your IP address.
Which is one of (but not the only) the reasons that I replied the way I did.
I think that decent ($14 to $11.5 is not decent) student discounts should be more common. I think it sucks that there are so many things that you want as a teenager that become a trivial purchase once you start working full time.
Since software, movies and music are all just information, these points apply:
*One person's piracy does not remove another persons ability to use the product. Unlike stealing a TV and whatever else gets stolen in that cinema anit-downloading commercial.
*In many cases (especially students) the intellectual property owner does not lose any profits. Why? Because it's a case of "I pirate, or I don't buy it at all". In the case of anti-piracy measures winning, the options are reduced to "I don't buy it".

Great Movie though, the Original was way ahead of its time, but yeah, I think hollywood is hard up for good writers these days. They rely to much on special effects and other visuals to get you to watch. But I did enjoy the remake of it.
Is that your scope in the avatar Mike?
I just saw it and wasn't that impressed, but it did keep me interested. Felt a bit let down by the special effects, the tripod things looked like they were cut and pasted straight from the Matrix II/III. Guess it helped cut costs a little.

Finally got a chance to see the movie.... the thing that stood out for me was the sound effects , the cinema had the latest digital sound systems etc etc , the sound was almost painful in places ....just awesome . The feeling of despair as the tripods laid waste to everything was well done and TC played a good part , the Tim Robbins scene was weird and what the aliens where doing with human captives will restrict {courtesy the missus} my next visits to the cinema to watching comedy/romance stuff. Enjoyed the movie.

Ahh, I watched the original "Day of the Triffids" just the other night. The special effects were even worse than the old Dr Who shows. I loved it.
The DVD also had the original "Little Shop of Horrors" on it as well. Jack Nicholson had a small part in it as the Masochist going to the dentist. What a hoot.

I watched this show on the weekend for the first time, courtesy of Foxtel Box Office..
I also hadn't seen the original, or read the book.
I enjoyed the movie, the sounds and music were great, and the movie did have a real "thriller" feel to it, without being overly "scary". My wife didn't really enjoy it, she commented that she was tensed up through the whole thing. :) Although she said the same about MI3 and the non-stop action.
Having not read the book, I was a bit perplexed about the ending as there wasn't a lot of explanation.. was it Earth's biology, little organisms etc, that brought the machines to an end? How and why?
And why did the aliens wait thousands/millions of years after burying the robots, before bringing them out of the ground? If they wanted Earth's resources, why couldn't they do it back then, instead of waiting until humans occupied the Earth and having an excuse to cut loose with the mega-death-ray?! :)
I also wanted to know how the son made it to Boston.. maybe Tom and his daughter should have followed him.. he got there before them.
Anyway, I did enjoy it but it's not something I'd write a rave review about.
didn't the ailens catch a cold or sumpin?
The new movie is good but IMHO the classic 1953 George Pal version of The War Of The Worlds is the best I have a DVD of that version. Jeff Wayne's rock musical is also a favorite of mine I replaced my cassette copy with a CD, awesome music I close my eyes and I'm there.
