Isn't the governments latest ad/propoganda campaign just marvelous? I,m refering to the new apprenticeship ads and how you can become a new apprentice at age + 30 etc, with studying cash grants and wage top ups tax free and so forth.
They are trying to big note themselves and say look how good we are, we are addressing the tradesmen and tradeswomen short fall in the country.
May I remind them that they were the ones who caused the critical shortfall in apprenticeships and trades people in the first place, In the 70's when I started my apprenticeship I was 15 years of age and required only year 10 education--by the age of 19 I was a fully qualified tradesman.
The government later decided that to start an apprenticeship you would now require year 12 education--nothing wrong with an education but that puts you in as a 1st year at 18 or 19 years of age.
By this time you probably have a drivers license and are in a relationship and able to go to bars and maybe even thinking of buying a house and getting married--NOT on 1st years pay you don't.
So apprenticeships were given the khyber for better paying jobs hence no tradesmen coming through the ranks! You cannot live on 1st years pay as an 18 + year old were you could at 15 when you were still living at home had no car and very few expenses.
Having made a complete shambles of the trades and having to import foreign trades people and now throwing heaps of taxpayers money into this new scheme is a nice attempt at a cover up and trying to pull the wool over peoples eyes--WHAT A NERVE!
