Testing the Horsehead.

I took one 3 minute exposure at ISO800 of the horsehead. I have overprocessed this to the max to bring it out as much as I can. However, even with no darks, flats or offsets used here, I am happy that I captured it at all!

Cant wait for next friday night when I can stay up all night and do this again!..Properly.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how many exposures I would need, for how long each exposure and at what ISO?

Otherwise, I will go for ISO 800, and probably on hours worth of 3 minute exposures.

Definately don't give up on Horsey!!! I took a run of images with the Toucam and didn't see anything in them. They looked completely useless!!

At a later date I decided to process them anyway and Bzang! There he is!

Your camera will get waayyy more detail than my Toucam, so the info is in there to pull out.

Here's what I mean:
1. the dud images I didn't bother with.
2. Why it was finally worth processing them.

What's the noise level like in your environment? Do you have a nice cold ambient temperature? If the noise is low, I'd be going for 10 minute individual exposures, and about 5 of them, more if I can be bothered.

I find 10 minute sub's work well with my 350D if the temp is low enough (and hence noise low enough).

A couple of weeks ago it was minus 5 in the dome. Last friday night it was 12 degrees most of the night....who can tell?

A few dark frames usually do the trick.

The Horse is difficult, don't let anyone tell you different. Exposure is the key, and the more the better. I would also say that 12 degrees is killing the DSLR as well.

You certainly got it there Baz..!..:thumbsup:
when I imaged it early this year I found that 6min plus done the job but that is at f/5. so if you are using a ED80 you will have to go to what Roger has mentioned and do 10min or more if possible!!
