Uranus, 7th August 2007

Hi all

This is my first image of Uranus for 2007. Transparency wasn't great due to some dew forming on the mirror, but seeing was fairly reasonable.

This image is LRGB, with 800 frames of Luminance @ 15fps and 300 frames of R/G/B colour data @ 7.5fps each.

Hmm, not a very exciting target and very frustrating to get on the chip of the CCD at > 11m focal length. I'm not sure if I'll try for Uranus again this year :)

Anyway glad to have captured a nice big disc anyway.

I've looked at Uranus a few times - I have no idea how O'Meara worked out the planet's rotation period from peering at 4 arc seconds of green fuzz.

Very nice Mike, I know what you mean about trying to get it onto the CCD chip, I tried with the LPI and it can quite fiddly for sure.

It's a great image and the green hues look great as well.

We're in the midst of a series of Uranian mutual satellite occultations, where the moons eclipse and occult each other.

A challenge would be to capture such an event!

Page 121 of the Astronomy 2007 yearbook has filtered the events to show those visible from Australia.
