Please take note. This unreliable member of the Kulnura Mob will DEFINITELY be there this weekend!:ashamed:
Regardless of the weather.:cold:
I'm not working this Friday, so either Friday or Saturday suits me beautifully. I should arrive early in the morning on both days to atone for my overt slackness. :P
Do not think, under any circumstances, that you guys will be having the place all to yourselves and having all the fun again!:P

It's most unfortunate, but I will not be able to make either day this weekend. :( I'm most disappointed about it, as the weather is predicted to be clear all weekend! But she who must be obeyed has other plans for me! :family:
Anyway for that reason I will 200% keen for the (following) long weekend, probably on the saturday night. I hope some others are keen for that weekend too! :)
Have a great weekend guys, I can't wait to read the writeup!
Brendan

I too shall have to check with she who must be obeyed, but it sounds like a good idea. might have to finish that uni assignment first.
Saturday would be my preferance:cheers:

Ok guys and gals,
It looks like we have several attending this Saturday Night 4/6. I think most of these people are keen to attend the following Saturday 11/6 as well, I know Andrew myself and Loiue are keen to do something both weekends for starters.
Attendance list as confirmed by phone for Saturday 4/6 between 4:30pm and 6:00pm.
Anthony (Frogman)
Louie (Atalas)
John B (Ausastronomer)
Andrew (Hector)
Wayne (Trufflehunter)
Cahulian
Anyone else that can attend this Saturday please send me a PM or email or post here on the forum and I will continue to update the attendance list. For those that can't make it this weekend hopefully we can get together the following weekend.
This weekend Andrew is going to drop Hector (20" scope) off at Kulnurra at about 5pm set it up and then leave for about 3 to 4 hrs. He has entrusted me with the enviable task of driving Hector until his return between 8pm and 9pm.
Anthony has indicated that there will be no power availability on site in the near future due to renovations, however Louie and I have the Tea and Coffee situation in hand. I am bringing a small LPG ring burner and Louie is bringing a kettle or saucepan and milk, tea, coffee and sugar. I will bring a supply of insulated foam coffee cups and plastic spoons, all you need to bring is something to nibble on.
CS-John B
PS: Too Bad if you don't like Louie's Coffee :)

Andrew,
Agree entirely...the new series of Doctor Who is exciting. Saturday nights at 7.30pm are booked! I'm taping them as I watch them, but looking forward to the DVD release later this year.
Okay...out in the backyard at 8.20pm observing.

31-05-2005, 09:29 PM

Hope you all have a great night.

I just think you need more people starting a thread like this, Geoff.. There's loads of IIS members in Vic area, just need someone to say "let's do it". It sounded like everyone had a great time last time, so just do it again.. make it a regular thing.
I'm extremely jealous I can't make it this weekend, I just hope this ultrafine weather keeps up for another week and a bit :D

Can we leave it as tentative at the moment but maybe I can confirm closer to Saturday?
I'd really like to come along if possible
ausastronomer
01-06-2005, 01:53 PM
Hi Seeker,
Sure you can go down as a tentative.
I will PM you with my phone number and you can call on the day if your coming. Depending on the area we observe from it may be an advantage to know roughly who's coming so we can allow appropriate space in setting up on the observing field.

I have looked at the observing challenge for this month and i recon that we can easily observe them this weekend. It will be fun to show you these interesting objects. Anyone have any other objects that they would like????
I do have a programme to follow but it will not take alnight so if you have anything interesting please let me know on here or bring a list.
See you all on Saturday.
After the good Doctor ofcourse.

Guys, I am devastated to say that I can't be there on Saturday (prior commitment to someone's 40th), but I might still come up on Friday night (on my lonesome:whistle: ) because the thought of those dark skies are getting my juices flowing.... Anthony, is it OK if I come on Friday to use the site?
I am a definite for the following weekend (11th). Mike is coming then too.
Hope you guys have a great time on Sat night!:)

sorry guy's i can't make it, have a prior date at which to indulge my 2 other hobbies pyrotechnical facination and fire fighting.
I only hope the voodoo on our local school fire works display doesn't affect kulnura. (it either rains, clouds out or blows a westerly gale). The long weekend is also out due to other commitments.
I will try and keep the new moon weekend in July free.

Guys, I need urgent advice! This arvo I casually sauntered into SuperCheap Autos looking for (and fully expecting to find) a 12V hair dryer!
No such luck :(
Where can I pick one up on a Saturday morning?
Also... Louie, my old mate... ol' buddy, ol' pal... will you be bringing along your 27 Pan? Striker's got one for sale and I'd like to do another comparison with my Meade QX 26 before I take the plunge!
I couldn't get a hair dryer but I did get a beanie and the bickies! :) And I'm about to key Kulnura's lat/long into Autostar so the little blue guy knows where he's pointing this time! hehehe

Wayne PM me and I will lend you mine for tomorrow night, no not the 12" SCT but the 12 volt hair dryer. And if you are really nice to me I will also lend you my GPS mate, all you have to do is plug in in and hit the button, it will read the gps coords to the meade and thats it , position, height, and millisecond accuracy. :reindeer:
Allas I cannot go but I am looking forward for next weekend. And knowing the typical long weekend june weather it will be very clear and sunny :lol2:

05-06-2005, 04:49 PM
ill leave the report for the other guys cause im stuffed..... i enjoyed the night very much .
and it was fun watching the two "boys" fight over the collimation of my scope:D hector is fun to drive and observe through, however, 20" is just too damn big. i think 12" will do just fine.
now back to the scopes :D once again i would like to thank Trufflehunter for the use of his toys.......i had the chance to use a 13 and an 8mm nagler ohhhh wow ..... and i had the chance to have a go at pushing buttons on a ""buzz click"" thanks wayne.
Thank the dark skies it was not a heavy dew night but only a light if any dew fall throughout the night...
I think that will do from me....
Hope all enjoyed..
Anthony... can i go to bed now ?

Big thanks Anthony for the use of your dark skies last night.
My son Ron and I had a blast, the view of the Ghost of Jupiter was the highlight of Ron's night(through Hector) :eyepop: he is planning to brag to his Science teacher about it.
The highlight for me was finding the hamburger galaxy as I was unable to see it in my light polluted yard. It was really exciting for me to look through the other scopes and eye pieces there and a really big thank you to everyone for making ron and myself feel really welcome and part of the group especially Louie for letting me look through his ep's.
If she who rules with an Iron Rod lets me out of the house I will love to attend next weekend. From my yard I can see about 15% of the night sky so that limits what I can look for, but last night I could see so much sky I didn't know where to point my scope  next week I will have a list of objects to aim for. With a little homework I will try for easy targets and a few that will stretch my knowledge of the sky and my scopes abilities. I also found out that there are red lights and there are red lights lol I'll try and bring something a little less bright next time. Being a newbe I think I'm entitled to make all the mistakes at least once. All my friends who have seen my 8" scope have been very impressed with it's size but my pride and joy looked like a little baby compared to what was on show last night, saying that I did manage to find a DSO that the 12" didnt :D I had a great time and met a nice bunch of blokes, learnt more about the night sky,got abused for not drinking tea or coffee :P ,found new DSO's,saw Jupiter (my favourite planet) in a 20' Dob,made some new friends, got lost on the way home he he he. :ashamed:
All in all a great night out for the price of a few litres of petrol.

I can't believe I actually made it this time! It was another great night which we've all come to expect from Kulnura. A high mist kept hovering around which affected the transparency a little and the seeing I would rate at about 3/5. To the naked eye the stars were hardly twinkling at all but high power images weren't holding up quite as well as we might have liked, so my plans for splitting difficult doubles took a bit of a back seat. But it was ten times better than any 'good' night in my backyard! Thanks again to Anthony for putting up with us (and for feeding me your leftovers :P)
It was a pleasure to meet Narayan and chat about imaging. Looking forward to seeing the fruits of your labour that night, N.
Great to meet Cahullian and his son Ron. It would be great to see you there again next weekend! It is a tricky place to get out of back to Newcastle in the middle of the night, I know what you mean!
Hector was dazzling! Thanks so much to Andrew for bringing him along, and to John B for filling in. I wish I could remember all those NGC numbers that were flying around! The Tarantula and Eta Carinae through a 20" scope is simply breath-taking. The list of things we looked at through that beast is too long, but nothing failed to impress. Probably the highlight for me with Hector was when I decided to pan him around the Larger Magellanic Cloud... there were amazingly detailed patches of nebulosity and tiny globular clusters everywhere! I nearly fell off the ladder. I'm sure I spilled my coffee.
Louie, always great company mate! Thanks for the loan of the Pan 27 and for helping me collimate, and for the noodles!
Last but not least, big thanks to David (Houghy) for lending me his 12V hair dryer and his GPS-Mate. Even though he couldn't make it in person, he was there in spirit ! Hope you can make it next weekend, David!
I've attached a photo of Anthony's dob-truck. I think all you dob owners should get one! Sounds like an essential accessory along with those Cheshire thingies and Teflon Stuff you're always talking about... jeez it's like another language! :nerd:
Rod and Mike. Missed you guys. Hope to catch up next weekend!
Finally... anyone reading this who hasn't yet come along, do yourselves a favour and try to make it next weekend. You don't know what you're missing out on. Honestly!

Great report, soooo wish I could've made it. I hope you guys can make it this weekend too - though we'll have to keep an eye on the weather, it seems the clear weather has come to an end for a few days at least.
What was the bottom field like?

Yes it was a great night, good to meet everyone and have a look through Hector..the view of M83 in particular through the big scope was fantastic, thnaks to John and Andrew.
Good to meet Cahullian and Ron with broken arm, (even though they failed to deliver the promised busload of girls)
As is now usual my battery pack died before I could accomplish anything useful but Louie being the champ he is came to the rescue.
I powered my laptop and webcam using his battery pack and Louie and I took the attached image of Omega Centauri through Louie's Tak. Anthony helped us focus on Jupiter before we turned to other objects.
I have to say I liked what I was seeing on the lap top screen so much that I had to go and get Wayne and Anthony to come and have a look. John had a look too.
Louie and I also imaged M104, 4595 and tried Tempel1. The M104 is attached but the other two didnt turn out all well unfortunately..think we missed the comet altogether and the galaxy requires more exposure,
Unfortunately my internet at home fell over so I couldnt post these yesterday

the M104 image has been compressed too much..it actually turned out much better. in full res..maybe I can bring it to work and post it tomorrow after resizing differently
remember these images were with a webcam on a mount that was not polar aligned and so limited to 30 to 40 second exposures, on an ordinary night as far as seeing is concerned
that Omega Centauri image I think is the best I have ever managed.....
everyone should have a Tak :D
