Hi all
On the 13th of September 2007, IceInSpace will achieve a fantastic milestone - we turn 3 years old! To celebrate the event, it is with great pleasure that I can announce the IceInSpace 3rd Birthday Competition (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/?id=73,419,0,0,1,0)!
The competition is to celebrate our birthday, and to reward our loyal community with the chance to win some great prizes. To encourage participation in this competition, the questions will be multiple choice, and to be in the draw to win the prizes, you only need to get 1 answer correct!!
Please see the 3rd Birthday Competition Info Page (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/?id=73,419,0,0,1,0) for more information, including the fantastic prizes you can win, the rules, terms and conditions.
Special thanks go out to the generous sponsors of the competiiton who donate prizes for you, the community of IceInSpace, to win. Please show your thanks and support them, as they support you through this competition.
The competition will begin when we celebrate our birthday - on the 13th September 2007, so keep checking back for more!
Thanks!

It's no wonder this is the biggest Amateur site in the Southern hem (hopefully soon the world). With awesome people involved and kind sponsors too.
well done Mike, IIS crew and too all the members who helped keep this site going from the start (wish i was one of them).
Great stuff!!!
IIS just keeps going from strength to strength, and for many good reasons.
Congratulations, Mike, ahead of the official 3rd anniversary of this great website.
I have no doubts it will still be here long after others have come and gone.
It'll be interesting to see it in another 3 years.
Awesome competition Mike, congrats to you, the moderators and the sponsors for this wonderful community.
Cheers
Get stuff. Got some very nice gear there to win. Well done Mike on the great site that has help alot of people.

Hi all
Time to bump this thread again, because the 3rd birthday competition is now only 10 days away. You will notice the changes today the left bar, which will have a countdown to the competition and also proudly displays the sponsors of the competition. Without their support, there wouldn't be a competition and there wouldn't be prizes to give away! So thanks once again to the sponsors for donating prizes to the competition.
Also coming as somewhat of a surprise, the 3rd birthday competition also happens to timed with our 3000 member milestone. Thanks to the incredbile level of activitiy sustained throughout the Total Lunar Eclipse last week, we had a remarkable number of new members registering in the space of a few days.
We passed 3000 registered members (does not include un-activated accounts), which is another fantastic achievement for the IceInSpace community.
So, the competition is to celebrate both milestones - turning 3, and reaching 3000 members.
Remember, only active members of IceInSpace who have been a member for at least 1 month, and have made at least 5 posts, are eligible to take part in the competition.
Good luck to everyone!
Congratulations IceInSpace on celebrating two milestones, turning 3, and reaching 3000 members, One interesting point though, the rules of your comp bans your 3000th member from participating in it. I understand why the rules, just bad timing for #3000.
Great site, found you while looking for information on eyepieces and I'm still exploring.

Hi mib, :welcome: to IceInSpace.
Congratulations on being there when the total # of members ticked over to 3000!
It's a shame you can't participate in this competition but I hope you'll be around for the 4th birthday comp.

Great prizes Mike, a special thanks in advance to the Sponsors.
Thanks for the welcome Mike. I'm sure I will be here for the 4th birthday.
I agree with everyone else, the prizes sure are very impressive, and I agree thanks to the sponsors.
Hey Iceman,
Do we have to be in Australia to participate? I'm in USA.
iceman
04-09-2007, 08:22 AM
No, you don't have to be in Australia to participate. However some of the prizes are available only to Australian residents. Check the rules which detail those exceptions.
Alright so the Stellar Seat can't be shipped. Boy that imager looks pretty nice. :eyepop:
How are you going to chose a winner?
iceman
04-09-2007, 09:06 AM
Also the AS&T subscription is available only to AU/NZ residents.
Out of a hat.
Great! Best & most fair way!
Those random number generators online aren't really random & they'll never pick some numbers.

Hey ,
what are the advantages of each of the binoculars, and disadvantages.
Thanks for any help XD
iceman
13-09-2007, 05:55 AM
Hi hubble.
There's not a lot of difference between the two binoculars. The 20x80 has more magnification and a larger aperture for more light gathering. Both are too heavy to be hand-held effectively, so you'll really need a tripod to use them properly.
If you have any more questions about them or binoculars in general, I'd suggest asking in the Equipment forums so you can get more detailed answers.

That was fun and educational!
(cannot trust those stockbrokers! )
Loving it.
Only got to Q10 so far, never really been big on space missions/nasa etc, just astronomy, so I'm researching and learning a lot too!
Still kinda stuck on question 1 tho.
I can find two discoverers (Edward Pigott and John Goodricke) before any of the given choices, maybe the question could be reworded?
Also question 6, Al's name should be spelled Shepard
EDIT: I gave an example rewording for Q1 but it gave away the answer to Q14 :(

WOH!!!! That was a MOMMOTH effort! :scared:
I learned heaps and had fun!
There were some REALLY tuff questions in there.
Fingers crossed..... I think I got them all right ;)

Fantastic! That's the whole aim of the quiz.. to get people learning and having fun while doing it.
If you have any specific questions/concerns about any of the questions, contact me via PM.

i really enjoyed the quiz, and id do it agian without the prizes. i think i got most of them right, although a few were real brain-teasers.
we should do this more often, just for fun.;)

Hmmm .. really hard questions, but good fun.
Took six hours to find all the answers in my dusty old astro library. Must get an Internet connection sometime ...
It sure was, I also learned quite a few things. Took a few hours of researching, but passed away a few boring hours at work
The first one is always checked, so even if you just submit it, you get at least 1 right which enters you in the contest.
EDIT: You get even more!
Okay my entry is in. that was good value Mike and there were some great questions in that lot to get me thinking.
Cheers

Dear IIS Contestant Entrants
I submitted Q1 to Mike for the competition and I have sent Mike an e-mail to clarify the issues mention in the posts above.
If you have any queries, it is preferable to PM Mike so he can raise them with the person who submitted the questions. Otherwise, in your public posts you risk either:
directly revealing the correct answer,
maybe misleading others if you “think” you have the correct answer, or
by removing a couple of the possible answers as contenders, provide others with a clue as to the correct answer.
I don’t think that there is a 50/50 or ‘phone a friend option yet…:)
Cheers
Dennis
Well, no answers were given, just saying some are the first option and all first options are checked...so if you didn't even do the quiz and just hit submit, you at least get 1 entry.
Ingo, Dennis wasn't talking about your post !!!
Dennis
14-09-2007, 12:28 PM
:lol:Thanks RB for tidying up behind me!
It’s terrific to see everyone’s keenness and enthusiasm over the competition and with an amazing swag of fabulous prizes on offer, I fully understand that everyone wants to give it their best shot – and good luck to everyone who enters!
Mike asked me to prepare 10 questions and in doing so, I put in my best effort as an acknowledgement of, and with respect for, Mike’s trust, the professional standing of the site and last but not least, the future efforts of potential entrants.
However, in researching the questions and then distilling the list of potential questions down to just 10, my typing fingers did not faithfully follow the thoughts in my mind with the precision required, and for that I apologise. :( This has resulted in a somewhat ambiguous and incomplete wording of Q1. I’m confident that Mike will fix this up so no one is penalised for my lapse in editing the final list.
However, the competition is both free, and fun, so please don’t let my stuff up spoil this educational and enjoyable competition. I do hope that everyone is able to enjoy what is a fabulous annual event right here, on IceInSpace, the real centre of the Universe!;)
Cheers

What so I can't call you up and ask which book you referenced it from at Qld Astrofest while basking in that glorious Queensland sun with that Greek statue physique :P
Hehe, he was referencing my post :)
I thought I had avoided giving away the answer, or even hinting at it. Even cleaned up after myself when I realised I had provided the answer to another question by accident.
I agree tho, I should have PM'd Mike, sorry, I totally forgot that PM's existed!
EDIT: When the comp is over will there be a list of correct answers?
Might jot-down what I selected to see where I went wrong later.

Well that was good fun! ...as always!
I don't suppose there's an easy way to update how many people have entered so far, is there? It was just the first thing I thought of when I submitted my answers... "I wonder how many others have entered?"
Thanks to Mike and everyone who submitted questions and especially the sponsors for the prizes!

Well done Mike (and anyone else involved in IIS in the last 3 years). Best site ever!
Love the quiz.. educational and made me remember things from my early teenage astronomy days.
Yes, Q1 was a bit curly so I pick the most relevant. I think I did well.

I think I spend 2 hours on it brought back memories of my Engineering open book exams. You could take any book you wanted and still struggle. Couple of them really tested my goggling skills. But the answers are out there. Surprisingly some i knew the answers to but most where goggled. Overall a lot of fun and i learned quiet a few things.
And oh yes a great set of prizes, thanks to the sponsors. Thanks to Mike and others who put it all together.

It's been on my 'to do' list for a couple of weeks. Finally got to it today while fending off attention-seeking children. I'm surprised to see the low number of entrants too. I imagine the number will go up a lot before the close.
So how much time is left? I can't see it because I am on my iPhone and the iPhone doesn't have flash or javascript, so it doesn't load.

9 hours 30 minutes to go, exactly (as of 07:30 am AEST)

It's all automated now. After 5pm tonight, when you go back to the quiz page, your results (and the correct answers) will be shown.
I expect (through experience of doing several of these quizes) that some people will want to challenge an answer, and more references or explanations may need to be provided.
In some cases, where an answer was ambiguous or multiple correct answers could be found, ALL people would be marked correct for that question.
It's also a good time to remind people that the quiz is for fun! :) The quiz masters (Dennis, Paul and myself) did the best we could to come up with interesting questions with unambiguous answers, but that's not always possible and the internet is a big place :)

How about an "Honour Roll" listing of everyone who aced the test?
It won't include me however (25/30)...the lowest score posted so far!
Does anyone want to see my list of excuses? :P
for me:
"You scored 29/30, which earns you 3 entries in the draw"
(woo hoo! :D)
did not know that I would earn three entries for that.

That was a fun competition, it had a good mixture of hard to easy (and some more obscure) questions! :) Thanks to the organisers and sponsors!
It appears as though my uni course, magazine subscriptions and general following of astronomy has been paying off - I somehow managed 30/30! :) I think it's mostly luck though, I was expecting some to be trick questions.

"You scored 25/30, which earns you 3 entries in the draw."
I'm chuffed and proud of myself as I used no Google or any other help. Kicking myself on a couple:
10. Which crew broadcast the first live colour TV from space?
I said Apollo 8 - Which was the first TV broadcast, but in B&W.
7. Which Apollo mission brought back the largest rock from the moon?
I said Apollo 17, which brought back the MOST rock, BUT Apollo 16 bought back the LARGEST rock.
Well done everyone, and to Mike.
Don't worry... 25/30 is quite respectable. That's 3 entries into the draw. Well done.
Great effort sheeny!

Click on the quiz (like you were going to take it again) and you should see the correct answers as well as what you answered for each question...work through the whole thing and at the bottom it will tell you your score and how many entries you've gotten.
Cheers!
Go to the quiz page and it will show you your answers, along with the correct answers. At the bottom of the page it shows you how many you got right.
Thanks heaps mnm and wavelandscott!!! Was desparate to see the answers, but the more I looked, the less I found! Got that nova question wrong - it isn't that obvious - or is it???!!!
I have learned a lot of interesting things from the quiz, it was well worth the time and challenge, and thank goodness for the net!

Ok some stats:
- 212 entries
- Highest score: 30/30 (DaveM, mnm, ghsmith45, iluvsaturn, wavelandscott, Chrissyo, slice of heaven, astro_south, SMR)
- Lowest score: 7 people got under 10, though I suspect they just pressed submit without trying to answer them.
- The "easiest" question was Q28, with 95% of people getting it right. Q25 wasn't far behind. (not counting Q1 for which everyone was marked correct).
- The "hardest" question was Q11, with only 48% of people getting it right. Q17 wasn't far behind, with only 52% of people getting it right.
Here are a couple of graphs, showing the distribution of the score's people got (expected for an easier quiz), and also a graph showing the percentage% of people that got each question right.
Regarding the draw, I won't be able to do it next week as I have a very busy week with work (going to Perth) and holidays as well. I'll be looking to do the draw in the week starting 8th October.
I'll keep you updated, sorry for the inconvenience and making you wait!
Well done everyone and i'm glad you all enjoyed the quiz, and hopefully learnt something from it too.
LOL my daughter Elizabeth(Astro Girl) basically did Ingo's trick and just selected all the last answers except for a couple that she guessed and got 16/30. :)
I throughly enjoyed the quiz, 28/30, (well how was I supposed to know the focal ratio formula , j/k).
Thanks to Mike, Terry, Paul and Dennis for organizing the quiz and to our generous sponsors for the prizes.

Maybe you could time your holidays better Mike
Thanks for a cool quiz.

Just to tidy up the ambiguity about Q1 for all you cosmic yardstick fanatics out there.
The original question for Q1 was: What is the Period-Luminosity Relationship?
However, the multiple choice answers were far too lengthy for the format of the quiz.
To keep answers short, I modified the question to read: Who discovered the Period-Luminosity Relationship of Cepheid variables? Except during editing, I somehow lost the crucial text, Period-Luminosity Relationship.
Those who answered Henrietta Swan Leavitt must have (correctly) inferred that I intended the question to read Period-Luminosity Relationship. But, without that qualifying reference to the Period-Luminosity Relationship, my reference sources indicated that all the choices have a strong historical association with Cepheid variables:
Henrietta Swan Leavitt discovered the Period-Luminosity Relationship of Cepheid variables.
Edwin Hubble used the 100" telescope at the Mount Wilson Observatory to detect variable stars in nebulae. He discovered that the stars he observed had the same characteristic variations in their brightness as a class of stars called Cepheid Variables.
Harlow Shapley used the period-luminosity relationship for Cepheid variable stars to determine distances to globular clusters.
Ejnar Hertzsprung found the distance to the Small Magellanic Cloud, the first distance to an object outside the Milky Way, by using the delta-Cephei type of variable stars.
So, the (intended) full question: Who discovered the Period-Luminosity Relationship of Cepheid variables? has only one correct answer from the list of names, that being Henrietta Swan Leavitt. But, given the incomplete wording, Mike has marked all entries as correct.
Cheers

I've organised with York Optical to do the draw in the week starting 8th October. Once a date is finalised I'll let everyone know.
Sorry I can't do it next week but I literally won't be around or have the time.

Hi All
Whoa just checked my score, 30/30 Great quiz and loved it. Gave me a chance to use some of my trusty newly acquired library of astronomy which comprises of 20 or so DVDs, Practical Skywatching ISBN1 876778 91-1 which I find a great asset and Gosford library, brought back memories of school, NO GOOGLE.

Thanks again for the brain tease Mike.
27/30 wrapped! Personally I found Q1 worded fine, you just had to read it. There was only one discoverer, all the others only used an already known star type for thier own research.
Anyway well done all and bring on the draw.
17/30, I felt bad Using Google.
Ah well, Next year I'll try harder

Hi Netwolf
Sorry for the tardy response and thanks, the series comes from one of these DVD collections by a company called IMP. I have 25 with scores to go. I thought, "here we go again" a couple to get you in them wait for the onslaught, but it's not like that at all you can cease your collecting and re-establish whenever you like.

I understood Q1 just fine as well. It's nice to be reminded about the successful female Astronomers.
Vash, I know it feels a bit like cheating using Google, but one of the aims of the quiz is to stimulate your mind and encourage research.
I only looked up the questions that I absolutely didn't know the answers to, but took my best shot at the questions that I thought I knew.

I might sound dumb, but how do you know your scores?
Have they been listed somewhere that I can't see?

Sandy, as was said earlier in this thread:-
"Go to the quiz page and it will show you your answers, along with the correct answers. At the bottom of the page it shows you how many you got right."
Just pretend you are doing the quizz again and ..... Ooh! The link has gone from the left hand side of this page? Hmmmm?
Edit:- OK, try this link:- http://www.iceinspace.com.au/index.php?id=73,427,0,0,1,0

The draw will be sometime next week.
Great competition congratulations Mike. I got 27/30 which is okay, q11 got me also as well as two others I won,t admit to here.Good luck to all.
I got like 17 out of 30 and didn't use google. I think the people who admitted to using google should be disqualified as quizzes I've taken in the past were often not open book. Using google in my opinion was cheating on this quiz.
Ah well, to each their own.
Given the audience the quiz was aimed at - amateurs, it would have been too difficult without googling IMO - anyway, it is a good learning experience for us am's to look the stuff up.....

There's absolutely no problem in using google. It's not cheating.
It's called research.
I'd rather people "research" and get the right answer, than "guess" and get the wrong answer.
The aim of the quiz is to hopefully get people to perhaps learn something they didn't know before. It doesn't matter to me how they get there.

Interesting comment. I was asked by Mike if I would like to prepare 10 questions, which I did, all sourced from my collection of space and astronomy books. However, after I had compiled my candidate list of questions, I used Google to corroborate the answers, to provide Mike with http links so that entrants could check the answers.
Overwhelmingly, I prefer to browse books to look for suitable questions, but Google was more effective and certainly quicker in searching for multiple reference sources to support the answers.
Cheers
