Did anyone else see a large and unusual object/shooting star in the Canberra sky on Sunday night 29/7/07 around 8pm aest.

It travelled from south to north, traversing the entrire sky in about 4-5 seconds! It looked like a large white ball with glowing red ring. It had no tail. At arms length, the size of the ball was about the size of a golf ball (maybe slightly larger)!!!

There are so many unusual things about this sighting I don't know where to begin (speed, size, direction of travel, lack of tail/noise, etc.), so I post here hoping someone else saw it.

Are there any automated meteor tracking cameras in the southern hemisphere? Did someone get a photo of it?

Sorry Peter, I missed that one. I hope someone was able to catch an image, it sounds very intriguing.

Cheers

I have no idea, Peter. On a prosaic level: Did anyone in the area have a commercial promotion running with the use of a searchlight?

I took one look at the Moonlit cloudy cover and went inside to stay all night. Sorry Peter, didn't see anything. I will keep my ear out though, someone might mention something.
