Starting to get used to the new set-up now.
There was a waxing first quarter moon last night, which didn't help with all that extra light in the sky, but at least the atmosphere above Canberra was cold, dry, crisp and fairly stable.
Anyway, image details as follows...
Canon400D on Skywatcher ED80 prime focus. Piggybacked and manually tracked with illuminated reticule eyepiece on Celestron Nexstar 11 GPS.
13 x 2 minute exposures at ISO800 total exposure of 26 minutes. Stacked with Deep sky Stacker and darks subtracted.
I will probably give this one another crack on new moon.
Hope you like it anyway,
Cheers,
Baz

hi Baz,
I have seen this cool pic today in another forum but I still am very impressed with it so let me congratulate to this again!
the DSLR cams sure are very sensitive - 26 minutes only and a huge amount of detail and colordepths!
...I will probably give this one another crack on new moon...
that is what I`d really wish for. give this one another 230 minutes in stead of 23, and then is perfect!
how did You manage noise of the chip with so little exp-time???
when I imaged with my EOS 300d those many years ago noise and hotties gave me really a hard time - so I picked CCD cameras.

Done well Baz, with such short exposures as well, may need to tweak the focus a bit more. Seeing was good here last night as well but as soon as I started imaging a lovely fog/low cloud rolled in!!! bummer.
cheers and keep at it!!!

The temperature in the dome was roughly minus 1 which was a help. Also, After the lights, I put the lens cap on the ED80 and took 19 darks for the same exposure time as the lights. That made a huge difference in noise reduction once subtracted. My camera battery went flat this time, so I didnt get to tak the 19 offsets at 1/4000 sec that i wanted to. It still turned out ok though.
I have since had another play with this image as someone on another forum told me that I need to be more "Agressive" with my processing and there was still a lot of data left on the table with this image.
The new pic has come out a lot better IMHO!
Very nice images Baz, you have pulled a lot of data out of the second image and your skills are rapidly improving.
A top effort.
Well Baz, i reckon you are heading in the right direction great effort indeed, nice color in that image.
