I have to agree. Tested a lot of different Aussie beers last trip down, but really liked Tooheys Old Black. I like the dark beers. Closest I can come here in the states is New Castle Brown Ale imported from England.

Home Brew, usually the Coopers Lager is a great summer beer to make and I usually get them to average 5.5% alchohol content.:drink:

Great fun and it is quite an art to make a really good beer as opposed to a standard beer, a bit like astrophotography :D

A good mate of mine always says:
"There's no such thing as bad beer - there's beer you like, and beer you like a lot"

Having said that I once tasted some crap in Bali called Bali-Hai, and it was so attrocious that I actually poured it all out bar the first mouthful.
(Such a shame when they have some great beers there like Bintang and Anchor.)

Of course the 2 best alcoholic beverages in the world are XXXX Bitter Ale, and Bundaberg Rum ... both made up here in God's own country of course!

I live in Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills where the local hotel serves Hofbrau Munchen Pilsner on draught. That is a nice beer to wash a steak down with!
Local stuff - Coopers pale and sparkling ale (not mixed!)
Others...Budwar (Chezch), Tiger beer (Thai I think?), San Miguel (Spain).
Don't tend to indulge as much as I used to now.
Drunk in charge of an RA drive!!!!
Cheers(!)

23-07-2007, 09:49 PM
I tend to find that Cascade tastes like a garden centre smells and Boags a little bit smoother and less "garden-centre" like but still a little taste of it...maybe its cos of the malty taste of OLD im used to....VB is good but its nasty! In a good way of course!
Crown is smooth, i can drink them all night.....

Is Beez Neez similar to Boags or is it like a "New" or a XXXX Gold??

Not much of a drinker these days but I have to add a vote for the amazing range of great New Zealand beers. Monteiths, Macs, Tui even a Lion Red if the company is right! They also have a thriving micro brewery industry which produces some great brews.

Monteiths was available from Safeway a while ago but not sure if that's still the case.

Monteiths Celtic Red remains my favourite but they have about 7 different ones to choose from.

I don't know why Aussies have the reputation as drinkers because those Kiwis can sure hit it hard!!

Lean towards the dark side here, Guinness, Tooheys Old, Carlton Black. Used to brew some Coopers Stout a few years back. Back in Scotland it was draught Guinness or Fowlers "Wee Heavy" (about 8%, not to be taken in great quantity :P ), but on a cold night there's nothing to beat a dram of straight malt :)

I enjoy my own home made beer. Better than any commercial beer I have tried. I can make any style from light Euro lagers to English ales to Irish stouts and ambers. No preservatives, clarifiers, stabilisers or any other chemicals to make you feel bad the next day, I only use the best malt, hops and yeast available.
Commercial brew makes me spew.....

One of my friends made his own "TOOHEYS OLD" in HB and it tasted a lot different and i was able to drink more of it before feeling any effect, and they were 750 Ml bottles too! Im a FAN of HB!
Never got sick on it once!
I prefer bottled beer at locals as the On-Tap stuff i have had has made me sick on 3 separate occasions, bottled beer NEVER made me sick.......

I had a friend back in Scotland who used to brew all sorts of beers and wines. He used old brewers text books and reduced the quantities for home use, e.g translate 1 hundredweight of malt to 1 pound. I used to love dropping in for a visit. Keg in the corner of the living room complete with, CO2 cylinder and Swan Neck dispenser on the keg. :) He had a party for his wifes 30th birthday and all the grog was home brewed. Only guy who was sick had been on pub beer before he got there, never had a drop of Jim's brew. He tried for years to make Guinness, could only ever get 2 out of 3 right. Colour and taste but no head, head and colour OK, too sweet etc. I even managed to get him some Guinness yeast when I was working in a brewery, but it did'nt help. There's nothing like the real thing :P
One of his best wines was a lovely Rose, made from National Health Concentrated Orange Juice and Rose Hip Syrup.

Cheers

I'm a beer fanatic, I spent two years in Munich. Been to the real Beer Fest twice. My fav beer is Schneider Weise Beer. You can get it in some bottle shops here in Sydney, Shoffer Hoffer Christall (sp) or Weisse is really good to, also available in Oz. For Oz beer it has to be Boags, all the way.

Buy that man a beer!
Monteiths is a great drop, but like Guinness, does not travel well.

Apart from that, Stella Artois rules.

I have a few favourites. Mountain Goats Hightail Ale and Little Creatures Bright Ale are two regulars (I prefer ales). Don't know whether it's psychological or not but they do taste better from a glass ... having a Bright Ale as I type :).

Two other rippers I like are Little Creatures Pale Ale and Squires India Pale Ale. Both are quite strong and bitter, particularly Squires IPA. Squires Porter is a nice beer, but it's pretty heavy and I can't drink to many in one sitting.

I started sampling all the craft beers at Dan Murphys a few years ago. It's become quite expensive but I can't go back to the mass produced stuff. They taste like bong water.

When was young..er I somehow bumped into a guy and his girlfriend who invited a bunch of us back to his parents house one weekend when they were away .. his father was a master brewer his games room was full of brewing trophys from all around the world..better still his bar had 3 full size double fridges stocked full of every type of beer you could imagine .
I DO remember falling down a step or two when we left that day.. and if I recall right he got in lots of trouble the following week for consumeing a bottle or six of some unfinished brews that were important to the old boy.

my wife gets given samples of some pretty nice beers these days through work.. as a sampler of many from around the world I can honestly recomend the two.. little creatures ..offerings mentioned above they are IMO two of
my most drinkable beers I have ever had :)

most favorite ?.. free of course :)
