I am working in Aberdeen Scotland for the next 5 weeks.... I got here two Sundays ago, and the first day I was here it was clear but it never got completely dark at night. In fact, even now, nautical twilight lasts all night. I was barely able to see the Summer Triangle that night due to the non-darkness. After that, every single day has been clouded out and rain seems almost constant in what is one of the worst British summers this millennium.
I hope I get better luck in North America in September where I may really see the North America nebula.

Hi castor! It's a shame you couldn't be there at a time to really take advantage of seeing the northern sky (for the first time?) at night.
I imagine Scotland is a lovely place, though.

Aberdeen....Castor....is there a connection with oil in there somewhere?

As a Scot, I can tell you that the weather you describe is actually typical of a Scottish summer :(

But the winters are beautiful. We spent 2 weeks camping in the Cairngorms over Xmas one year, where it dropped to -20 deg C on a few of those nights. We had ice forming inside the inner tent, from the condensation due to our breathing as we slept.

Hi Caster, The Scottish weather is terrible some times. I remember being out at -18 doing astronomy about 10 years ago and the due froze solid on the mount. :) I swapped the Scottish weather for Brisbane.
PS
Caster and Aberdeen........Dennis, thats a good one. Where i came from they made you take a spoonfull of that stuff if you swore :( And you never swore again :)

Yeah – as a youth, I can’t remember if it was Mum or School that used to give us a (mandatory) teaspoon of castor oil once a week - yukkkkhh

We spent a couple of weeks driving the B roads and camping through Scotland a number of years ago.
I absolutely loved it.
The days were warm/hot and the nights cool. The scenery, the Highlands, the lochs, the Castles, the Abbeys, the history.....I could go on and on.
I had the best Indian food ever in Inverness. yum.
Enjoy your time there.
Caster .....
Keep an eye out for the northern lights while up their. I used to photograph them. Its one of the best places to see them.

I will be in the Lofoten Islands (latitude 68 degrees north) in Norway at the end of August, and it is probably the best chance for me to see the Northern Lights then as we will be having some night by that time.

Just came to me that at this far north, Castor is nearly circumpolar from here (I am at 57 degrees N and Castor's declination is +30).
