With an aperture of 10.4 metres, Spain's new Gran Telescopio Canarias is about to assume the title.

Hmm started me thinking, how do these big telescopes on Alt/Az mounts compensate for field rotation?? google "field rotation compensation large telescopes" there's some interesting stuff out there.
Nowwhy can't I ever find an observing site like that? Mine always seem to have the clouds above, not below.
