What do you like to observe?

Hi All,
Well it's nice to talk about scopes but i was looking for a group the talked about observing, thats why we have a telescope right!:P

So what do you like to observe ?

I like observing the planets, but i do like things that move. So I like observing Jovian shadow transtis. Also the changes on Mars.

As for deep sky Globulars are my fancy with double stars close second.

Also a Comet in the sky is a thrill:atom:

All other stuff is cool also:cool:

I hope you have clear skies at night and let it rain while we are at work:D

Hey Dave..

My favourites are the planets at the moment, but i'm getting really sick of waking up at 3:30am to look at them, can't wait till after xmas and I might be able to catch them before I go to bed! :zzz:

My favourite deepspace stuff is Omega Centauri and 47Tuc for the globs (no surprises there, right? :eyepop: ), but I do love the nebulas too, Tarantula, Eta Carinae and Orion of course, and I also love M8 and M20 when they're up. I really need to get me a UHC filter.

I do love using my 11x70's on a clear dark night, just scanning the milky way, and lately i've been trying to do some Iridium flare spotting..

All of this is good and well, but for 3 weeks straight now Sydney has been under cloud and rain. Tonight is looking like it might almost be clear.. /me crosses fingers!

Tonight I'm going to try and catch a glimpse of Comet Maccholz, thanks to Mick!

Hi Iceman,
I use the UHC and O111, they work really well. I was blown away many years ago with my first look at the Carina nebula with the O111.
Just got to pick what nebula works best with each filter.
I wish I could afford the 2 inch filters:sad:

Maccholz is a great comet I hope you get a great view:astron:

I thought I mite get out tonight, but the weather has really changed, and it looks as if it mite rain soon, it has also got very cold:cold:

Ice, we got to see a 0 mag Iridium flare tonight while having F&C at the Mariner with the kids. Dave, I have seen some beautiful Jupiter Moon Eclipses, seeing a Moon burst back into the sunlight away from Jupiter’s globe is a wonderful sight. I also like Globular clusters and Comets. :D

For me M42.......... And Saturn..

To be honest ..M42 is fantastic...but when you have friends over and you say..lets check out a planet ..'Saturn always wins hands down'...

Set the scope up last night to cool down, at 8:15pm the sky was quite clear and I thought I'd get a nice view of the comet, but when I went back out at 8:45pm the sky was full with clouds :(

Also got up at 3:30am again this morning to try and image Saturn, but again clouds.. I can't buy a clear night at the moment. :cloudy: :mad2:

I am partial to Planetary , especially the gas giants , but enjoy finding new deep sky objects as well

Jupiter has always been a favourite , such a dynamic target , whether its surface features or the movements of the Jovian moons its simply awesome . Star clusters and gobulars stand out for me although any DSO ranks just as equally .NGC 3532 and other open star clusters around Eta Carine make that part of the sky a favourite along with the Scorpius {M7}and Sag and the numerous gobulars. Along with clusters i like just cruzing along rich starfeilds and noting any asterisms on the way. Double stars and plantery nebula are up there as well ....Acrux and the Ring neb.


Ps:comets as well , Comet Hakuyate of 96 was one of the best sights ive ever seen , from a ultra dark site near Albany WA

Hi Guy's,
One object I left out on purpose was the Moon:innocent:

It was interesting that no one mentioned it:confuse2:

The Moon to me is the best object in the sky!!
So much detail with all the craters, riles, moutain ranges, just so much. Plato with shadows deep across its basin is an awsome site.

It seems when it is clear the moon is around:confused:
So learn to love the moon and not hate it.

The cloud just wont leave me:cloudy:

Lets' see. M42, Tarantula, omega nebula, 47 Tuc, Omega Cen, Eta carina, Sculptor galawy, sombrero galaxy, Lagoon nebula (dark site needed) Saturn, Jupiter and Mars. The moon when I am really desperate and many more deep sky galaxies and nebula's:D There so many object to look at and check out.

Comets crashing into planets are also very cool, so long as it is not this one.:cool:
