Am I correct  in assuming that if a piece of astronomical software displays the time as UT then the observer must adjust to local time by...
adding if East of Greenwich and subtracting if West of Greenwich?
The site http://www.skyandtelescope.com/observing/objects/javascript/jupiter# (http://www.skyandtelescope.com/observing/objects/javascript/jupiter)
gives a map and telescope views of what to expect to see but I must have been misreading it. If my assumption above is not correct then I am really stuffed.

EST is UT + 10hr. So if it's showing for instance 14:32UT on 5 July, your Sydney time is 32 min after midnight (00:32am), 6 July. Add to east, subtract from west of Greenwich.

Don't forget you can use the "Your Zones" box on the left to add in timezones such as GMT and your local time.

And then you have daylight saving time coming in and out all the time and changing start and stop times, year on year! I rely on someone else getting it right for me:-

Peter, I think it's best if you try always to think of time in UTC, regardless of where you live. It's not hard and you soon get used to it. As I type this I see it's around and about 00:18 UTC. Should I use some software that included my longitude and latitude then that's it. It sure as heck beats jumping around between standard time for Sydney and making adjustments for daylight saving.

BTW if you are after a clock or two that shows local, UT, sidereal etc you could do worse than checking out this old thread. There are some good applications there. A nice simple one is joe_smith's one, but I use Al Sheeny's one all the time.
