My first DSO - 47 Tuc

Hey guys.

Here is an image of my first DSO taken a couple of weeks ago, I only just got around to processing it.

Taken afocally with the Sony DSCP100 on the tripod, pointing into a 15mm eyepiece.

3 images of 2 seconds each @ ISO 400 stacked in registax.

It's nowhere near as spectacular as looking through the eyepiece at it, but still, I was just experimenting and seeing what would come out :)

nice blob. Is the focus not quite there? Although hand holding 2 seconds is a terrific feat anyway. I fear that you are at the cross roads. Either a bracket to hold the afocal point and shoot, or a DSLR, sorry mate.
I built a bracket a while back to allow my point and shoot to be used afocally, although I never did long exposure stuff, just solar short exposure stuff.
It ain't rocket science, you just need to make a few things.

Gary, Focus could most certainly not be quite right, and I know I definitely need an adapter.. many times I almost bought the steadypix, many times I almost started making one of my own.
But since I got the webcam I didn't think I'd be using the digital camera to do much afocal stuff anymore.

But I guess, there'll always be times where the digital camera will be better than the webcam, like for full moon or full sun shots, eclipses etc.. so I might just take the plunge and get or make an adapter.

Have you got a picture or plans of the adapter you built?

Here what I used for the 2"eyepiece I adapted , and since i took these I have put a thread on the top of the barrel to make a better fit.
My d7 has a large lens with 49mm filter threads.
All I did was to buy a 49-52mm adapter $12.00 and machined the EP barrel so the thread adapter would press fit with some locktite . It cost $15 for the machining
You will notice that the camera strap is wraped around the scope >>>just in case.
The D7 is an Slr type but with out a removable lens. It give a FFOV at about 45mm on the camera lens and combined with the 42mm EP give just about a FOV of DSLR with out it lens.
There are how ever a bunch of lens in this set up.
Works a treat on wide field .
The bracket I made with a drill and hack saw and a few bit of aluminium bar and a hose clamp .
Cheap and simple >>just like me:P :D

a little more in contrast or a little less in brightness will make it look a bit better me thinks :)
still, nice work for a dob... its hard to do dsos in a dob :)
