Hi All,

I need one of these and am not sure which one to get. What I have been able to determine is regardless what of which i get none can take power via PCMCIA, the all need an external source to be plugged into the card via a adapter cable.

The Lacie Firwire800 card looks good but its seems to be discontinued. There is a Sunix card a CBF3100 which is the TI (texas instrument chip version).
My concern is how to get external power to these.

I have seen an external usb/firewire800 2.5" hdd caddy that has a power adapter and a pass through this could act like powered hub and also provide a means of fast external storage on the same bus as the camera.

I do have an older NW8000 laptop with a 4pin firwire port built in, this has been retired at this point to be sold or reused as Astro only laptop. I have thus far kept it as it has all the ports I need serial, usb, parallel and Firewire. Concern is that this is firewire A 400mbps with now power from the bus. Is this sufficent for the Dragon fly express? I can get the power via an external powere DVD writer, this has a pass though 6pin connector and has its own power pack. I wonder if I could trade this for telescope equipment!

Can people advise what they have used and what has worked well for them.

Fahim

Hi Fahim

I bought a cheap firewire PCMCIA card from ebay, and supposedly it gets power from the USB port (a plug is included that goes from USB to the card), but it didn't power my DMK and I doubt it would power your DX.

I had to get an external powered hub, about $80 from streetwise.com.au

240v into the hub, firewire cable from the PCMCIA card to the hub, 6-pin to 6-pni firewire cable from the camera to the hub.
