Just wondering what people do for work? Curious as to the type of person attracted to astronomy as a hobby, and I was wondering if there is any correlation between career and hobby/obsession/addiction :)
Personally, I am a network engineer, working on Telstra's Next Gen network in the development and testing phase before its rolled out in to the field.

Simple.......I dip into the superann. Just bought a set of eps and filters....Roll on the tax returns.

well I build and sell and repair PC's on the side, then steal from the house budget, and use any money for birthdays/christmas's, sell the kids to scientific experimentation and occasionally hit the credit card (too hard) only in times of crisis

Theres two questions there.
What do you do for work
I'm a technical officer for a small telco. Maintenance and operations of radio and microwave communications network equipment.
Since I was a little tacker I was curious about how things worked (including the universe).
How do you fund your addiction
I'm single and don't have to answer to anybody for my purchases

Fund???? There is a fund that I can dip into :eyepop:
Lots of careful saving until it reaches the point where I cant wait any longer and then it's on the card.
Cheers
Make a lot of my stuff , swap, trade, sell and buy, you name it i do it, then go to the bank, if more is needed.

I'm a teacher with 5 kids. Only 2 left at school now. I saved up $20 here and there and about a month ago I bought a GSO 8" DOB and its rained steadily since.
I'd like to know if you can search the members list on location. It'd be good to be in contact with somebody who lives locally to share the interest and maybe even viewing from time to time.

I am the MD for a chemical company...this means I don't really do any work.
As far as funding goes, I married a girl from a "wealthy" family and I am slowing spending her wealth without her knowledge....
Cheers!
I'm self employed and single too, so it's no dramas as long as I keep my eyes off the genuine Ritchey-Chrétien's and country real estate. I did what I did with most interests, I set aside a certain amount and then spent it all on the best setup that allowed. Scope, some EP's, Books, batteries, folding tables, all the basics. Aside from a few homemade bits and say 2 good eyepieces ( when I figure out what they are for my scope) I hope not to be spending much more for many years to come. I learnt a valuable lesson at my first astro camp, even before I had bought the setup. I saw some people with so much s*^% that they spent half the night setting it up and the other half swapping bits and pieces to and fro. I sensed that accessories could get in the way of looking up and determined to be content with a basic setup.
You make a good point KGB.

I am a visiting alien from the Planet Blargkpnftpleengopoople in a fantastic Galaxy over near the trendy part of the Universe. I am here on a secret mission and they gave me a budget to play with, but I have already spent it all.
Oops, I don't think I was suppose to tell you I am on a secret mission. Just ignore that bit. Thankyou.

I'm again employed after a 12 month break so once the backlog of bills are paid,
I'll be purchasing more astronomy equipment I don't really need :)

The important question is: does she have an equally financial sister who is lonely and single? ?
(or at least not happily married)

I'm a photographer/retoucher in the advertising and fashion industry. I work out of a Studio in Brisbane.
I'm also married with no kids. My method of gaining funds is either to sell off old camera gear (this is how I bought my Dob) or enchourage the wife to spend money on somthing for herself, then I get to spend the same amount on astornomy gear as its "only fair". :) This seems to work well if the money is there to begin with, but not so well when we are feeling poor (which is more often than not).

Aw crikey - someone else who obviously had to sit through a viewing of "The Secret"......
What trash.....:mad2: I wonder if producing that tripe was Ken's "secret" mission while he was out this way? :)
Doug - do you find that all your bills are automagically paid and a new telescope accessory lands on your doorstep every Friday morning out of nowhere too?

I thought I was marrying into a wealthy family. I first met my wife in a loud bar and mis-heard her say she was a Pathologist - love at first sight. Sometime later I found she had actually said she was a student Anthropologist - oh well, money isn't everything.
After seeing some serious devaluation of my LX90(purchased new) I've learned to buy decent gear at used prices. If I need to resell there's usually not much of a loss involved.

Nope, I married the only girl of the family...
Well Daniel
Im D & A counsellor for adolescents and am always looking for ways to inspire them. Wanted to show them our place in the universe and give them the perspective of belonging to one world...
So thats what will be funding this (still to get scope)...the other is i answer to no-one, although as someone said b4 on this site...it will be noodles for dinner for a little bit...
Snug
Although Im thinking i may get what i spend back in tax...ahhh bonus

That is awesome. I cannot think of a more nobel cause knowing what I went through as a teenager......well done keep up the awesome work.
That's a bummer ballaratdragons. I think if I found myself unemployed these days I'd jump on the bike and head out to one of those booming mining centres, go to the local on friday night and start buying drinks for the foremen. Even a TA job there will net 50K+ a year and there is nothing to spend it on except booze and telescopes. I don't drink either
Nice dark skies out at those places.

Now there's and IDEA, hmmm what to do with the kid????
Going cheap, I loud, demanding, non-sleeping young lady. Nearly new only 11 months old - any takers
Just kidding she's the light of my life, but....astronomy requires dark?????
I'll just stay here and quietly go insane I guess.
Wait I already am, or am I?
I'm confused.....hehe,
Seriously though I just wish the skys over Adelaide would clear up. It's been rain for days.
