5. Sat Night Feast? and for how many?

Bring your tent, Caravan, Winnibago or book into one of the bunkhouses.

Hi,
May I just elaborate a bit? The Snake Valley DSO hunt will be a challenge to find and catalogue the 100 DSO (Deep Sky Objects) from a list I will give out.

It’s a bit of a challenge or a project for observers to do over the camp period.
It’s a bit of fun and most objects will be able to be viewed in a 6” or bigger scope.
There will be at least 10 very hard to see objects but within range of a 10” scope.

The prize will be self satisfaction on completing the challenge.
But there maybe a prize or 2!! also, Stay tuned. :D

It will not be compulsory to do the challenge, but it will be something different than observing the same old objects all the time.

I have started my list and it is harder to find the obscure more than one thinks.

Good luck and if you have a object I mite include PM me please.
Don’t put it on the forum. As I do not want people finding things before the camp.

Regards.:)

THINGS TO SEE & DO

For anyone coming to Camp (or thinking about coming) there is plenty to do during the daytime, especially for those bringing kids.

Apart from the on-site swimming, canoeing, fishing, etc (bring your own canoes etc), and the local sights: Computer and Video Game Museum, Historic Gold sites, Sovereign Hill, Eureka Stockade, etc, there is also the Ballarat Show which is on Friday Saturday and Sunday. Ballarat is only 20 minutes away.

There is bush-walking at the back of the Camp, and General Stores within 5 minutes in both directions.

In Snake Valley is a Golf Course if you feel like a round.

SV100
Hi all, next week is SV camp so I thought you would like more information on the SV100. It’s a challenge to take up on nights while observing at the camp. Most people look at the same old objects all the time. I have put together a list of objects, some of you may have seen and may not have.
The list is by no means a full list (only 100 objects) and you will find most of them not too hard to find. Some are hard to make it interesting.
There will be two ways to take up the challenge. One is a list with only the NGC numbers. The other is with NGC numbers and it will have information on what the object is. With today’s Go To scopes punch a number in and of you go. But I would hope those people only take the list with the NGC numbers. So your challenge is not to find the object but to identify the object.
Those without Go To you take the full list then the challenge is to find the objects.
I have been happy to announce the challenge is kindly sponsored by
Steve Massey at My Astro Shop.
Steve has donated a 1.25” UHC filter.
Also a signed copy by the authors of the new book
Atlas of the Southern Night Sky.
See the photo below. I will give a talk on the challenge on Saturday afternoon of the camp.
So I will see you there and take up the challenge and make you observing time more fruitful.
Good Luck:).

So Ken, have the clear skies over Melbourne for the last few nights made it to Ballarat as well? I see they are predicting "fine" for another few days, but don't say anything about "clear".

Okay third time lucky.

Forecast over the period of the camp looks pretty damn good. Day time temps around 23c. During the day you may see some Convective type clouds which will clear by night fall.

The Jetstream is well south of Tasmania so this will not pose any threat to us. So nights should be clear and stable with temps around the 5c mark, in the valley. A little warmer up higher.

On your arrival to Snake Valley (or approaching from Ballarat), don't be alarmed if you see smoke in the sky.

The CFA has to do 3 burn-offs, but fortunately the CFA officer in charge of this event is Anthony (last years SVAA President), so as you can imagine, he is very aware of what the smoke could do to our sky.

All 3 burn-offs are North of Snake Valley, and the winds for all 4 days are southerlies, plus Camp is South of Snake Valley

The fires will be extinguished by late afternoon anyway.

He will be coming to Camp at night after the burn-offs, and he doesn't want the sky smoked up either.

Yep, and I have recently joined the CFA too. I would like to help save our town next time, instead of standing around not allowed to help like last time.

1 sleep to go!!!!!

More bookings have come in and have been added to the list above

Come on folks, still time to come along :)
