skywatcher eq5 goto and saxon 10"dob

Hi,

This is my first post here. this place is fantastic . the photos some of you have posted here boggle the mind. brilliant .
I am actually posting regarding some information on using these two items

Will this stand be sufficient in driving such a heavy telescope? the guy at my local shop said this is a good combination , but from searching this site information here seems its way under powered.

any input would be great thanks in advance.

welcome to the forum james , i am new here to , just recently bought a heq5 mount and when i got it the shop did say it may struggle on a scope above 8" , so i assume that on your eq5 that 10" tube may be a bit over its limit.
i may be wrong though:shrug:

So by the looks of it. a 10 inch on the eq5 is a miscalculation on his part. thank you again. the eq6 would be more like it then?

As for your question I would think that an EQ5 could handle a 10" for visual use but a heavy EQ5 would be better.

If you are into astrophotography the answer is a definite NO, you would need at lest an EQ6.

A HEQ5 and an 8" newt would be a good combination for astrophotography. If you can extend the budget, the EQ6 would be even better. For astrophotography you want the biggest and best mount you can afford.

The EQ5 is certainly not good for the 10", for both astrophotography and visual. You would definitely want to get the EQ6.

I have a Celestron EQ5 GoTo which I think is much the same as the EQ5 you have in mind. With an 8" tube mounted on it, I would say it is pretty close to the limit (by the time you add a laser and bracket, accu focus, crayford, Pentax eyepiece etc. it adds a kilo or two more). I have not done any astrophotography yet, but I expect the EQ5 will find it a bit of a struggle, it is an excellent mount for visual but photography may be a bit of a push.

The EQ6 however, from other people's observations, would be an excellent choice.

Hi James, welcome.
Lots of good advice so far..
My quick summary would be..
EQ5...6" newt
HEQ5...8" newt
EQ6..10" newt
and I would say that is loading the mount fairly well up near max payload when you add the extra goodies.
Like Mike says, a 8" on a EQ6 would make a very good platform for astrophotography but a HEQ5 would be good but more limited to visual and shorter exposures.

Sounds about right to me, I have a 10" on an EQ6 and it handles it well, but an EQ5 is a lot lighter mount.

8" f6 newt is about the limit or very close to it for the heq5, but i have heard of people puting 10" scope on them... cant imagine it would be good for the mount tho. an eq5 would be out of the question me thinks.
