Vic West Coast Milky Way

Fortunate to have a clear night on the weekend and the crescent moon setting low in the west didn't spoil the darkness in the east. This is a single shot using a Fujifilm mirrorless camera and a15-45mm kit lens. I set the lens wide open to f3.5 @15mm, 3200iso for a 30sec exposure. The ights from the apartments we were staying at lit the waves and sand on the beach nicely to add some mood to the scene. :)

A nice blend of sky, sea and land.

The bottom of the image almost frames it like a golden picture frame in a gallery.

Very nice especially for a single shot.
I didn't even know Fuji still made cameras, I have some old digital Fuji units but nothing I'd use as a primary camera. As for mirrorless, I'm shocked.

They always made a good camera in the past and fantastic 35mm film I'm sure they are a great camera now, I'd not seen them discussed much.


Oh, I have seen the 4/3 Fuji cameras mentioned, my brain is like a sieve.

Really like diagonal Milky-bar portraits with a natural foreground, Michael, it sets in stone that Earths tilt and our solar system plane always changes relative to the Galaxy.

Thanks Bob, I needed a shorter focal length than 15mm, I missed a bit of the Milky Way at the top but certainly being on that angle helped capture most of it in the frame!


Glad you liked it Leo. I certainly don't have one of Fujifilm's $11000 cameras but even the APSC ones aren't cheap. The model I have has a regular Bayer Matrix sensor and not their X-Trans sensor which appear in a lot of their cameras. I find my one has good Ha response, it's small and light and has pretty low noise at high ISOs.


Cheers Pierre. More good luck than skill. Nice for a change. I'm usually disappointed, unprepared or the weather is unfavourable. This time the sky was unexpectedly clear, I didn't have to light paint the foreground and all this a one minute walk from our apartment!

That's a beautiful shot Michael!
Where I live, just west of the Blue Mountains though we have crisp winter nights down to minus 12 we get some magnificent views of the Milky Way with less light pollution than more city regions and I just got a new heater band for my Samyang 14mm f2.8 ED and it mounts on a Nikon D810 so hopefully, one day all of this forever cloud will disappear (hopefully forever) and I can again try my hand. I do it every year, not once so far this year I don't think.
Wow, how did we get to the 6th month already?
I do have an Astro-Trac I'm keen on trying my hand with using the 14mm lens and 180 second exposures.

Cheers Anthony, jack of all trades perhaps but master of none, as they say. I always bring my camera with me if I'm heading somewhere with darker skies than I have at home. Got lucky this time!
