I said I would do some research on getting observatory status, In order to get light intrusion reduced.
Details are from AS4282
Quote:
"NOTE: A list of community and scientific optical observatories is available from the
Astronomical Society of Australia (Designated Observatories Officer), c/o School of Physics,
University of Sydney, N.S.W. 2006."

For some, this may be a first step in getting light intrusion reduced in their area.

AS 4282 goes into quite some detail on reducing light pollution for the benifit of astronomical observatories.

Our local observatory (and amateur society) at Mt Canopus has zoning laws regarding lighting pollution, enacted a year or so ago.

There was a recent article in the sunday mail about a guy who convinced energon energy to convert all the street lighting in his town to astronomy friendly ones (sodium vapour) . I can't remember the name of the town other than it was near kingaroy.

EDIT: It was Jim Barclay from South Burnett Maidenwell Astronomical Observatory (http://www.sbstars.com/mambo/component/option,com_frontpage/Itemid,1/)

I applaud your efforts - good luck with it :) even a mutual compromise is better than nothing.

Great to see some success stories
I Am starting to have some of the same successes up here in NE Arnhem land.
My ultimate goal would be to no longer see the small bright dot on the Aust light pollution map, that is the refinery here in Gove :eyepop:
