I would have to say that this series is far better than the tom baker series back in the 70/80’s and I thought that was great. It is absolutely gobsmackingly wonderful!!!!! I cannot get over the storyline being told and the detail provided. To improve on this will be difficult – but for this current crew – not impossible. Only one to go for the last episode this series………………………… :) :D

The first episode of the new season screens in NSW this Thursday night, and then is on every Saturday night thereafter.

I will miss Rose Tyler (played by Billie Piper), who I thought was a real star of the first two series. I wonder if, somehow, parallel universes can be crossed to allow some contact with the Doctor???? The sexual tension is killing me!!!

Yay:cool:, Dr Who is back. My withdrawals can be satisfied.

Yes I'm a tragic and proud of it :P

Dr. Who back on TV. Well it brings back memories from early eighties. I rarely watch TV now, so I don’t know what’s on. Anyone remembers Blake’s 7 (I think that’s was the name of SF serial). I really liked that one.

Does anyone remember the original Dr. I turn 50 in a fortnight and I remember watching as a 9 year old his name escapes me but he was old and had shoulder length grey or white hair--hard to tell on black and white tv

matt
26-06-2007, 08:51 PM
Wasn't that Patrick Troutman?

Paddy
26-06-2007, 09:26 PM
Patrick Trouton was the second Doctor. William Hartnett was the first

matt

For serious tragics:- http://www.gallifreyone.com/index.php

My favourites were Patrick Troughton (Dr #2) and Tom Baker (Dr #4) - but I do remember the grainy and contrasty B/W of the first series with Dr #1 and the wobbly sets and low budget costumed space monsters! Magic to a seven year old!

matt

Definitely part of its charm:lol:

Yes I am one of the confirmed "tragics".... or "Whovian" as they are generally referred to.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/

http://www.drwho-online.co.uk/

"The programme is listed by the Guinness World Records (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guinness_World_Records) as the longest-running science fiction television series in the world"
(from a Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_who))

I thought Christopher Ecclestone from the 2005 series was awesome but I have to admit that David Tennant from 2006/2007 is growing on me a lot.

I think what has made the "new" series (plural) so good has been the excellent stories they have written. In the new 45 minute format the stories have been faster, more "punchier" but they have managed to put in so much more character development.

The cross linking between stories to make a whole ongoing concept has been excellent, ie the ongoing "Bad Wolf" them in the 2005 series was cleverly done, but the "so far" partially evolved theme of the Doctor as the "lonely traveller" or the "lonely god" has got my interest and I cant wait to see how it develops. There is still the Doctor's 3rd and "final" meeting with The Face of Boe to come yet, which apparently occurs in Episode 3 of the 2007 series, in which The Face of Boe will reveal a great secret according to the Doctor and Boe's previous meeting.

(I know of a website where the new series has been available to view online as each episode has been released in the UK but I have specifically avoided temptation so far, thank God the new series starts on the ABC this week!)

There has also been a massive amount of online work done in creating websites that link in to many of the stories too - very clever stuff!

My favourite of these is the Torchwood House website:

Doctors I know of were:

1 William Hartnell
2 Patrick Troughton
3 John Pertwee
4 Tom Baker
5 Peter Davidson
6 Colin Baker
7 Sylvestor McCoy
8 Paul McGann
9 Christopher Eccleston
10 David Tennant

Peter Cushing played the doctor in the two Dalek films. Some kids hid behind the sofa when the Daleks came on, but school playgrounds were full of kids running around yelling "EXTERMINATE", I was one of them! Sad Aren't I?

There was a special fund raising Dr Who "story" called "The Curse of Fatal Death" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_Who_and_the_Curse_of_Fatal_D eath) that was never created as part of the genuine series, although it was "Sanctioned" as such being for charity.

It featured no less than 5 incarnations of the Doctor in one story, due to a rapid series of accidents and "Exterminations" - the roles being played by Rowan Atkinson, Richard E Grant, Jim Broadbent, Hugh Grant (who was offered the role ahead of Christopher Ecclestone for the 2005 series, and who has publicly said he regrets dismissing it when he saw how good the series was) and finally the first female Doctor ever, Joanna Lumley!

This is available on VHS, I've got it and it is very funny, well worth getting if you are a fan at all!

"The Curse of Fatal Death" I think I'd have to hunt that one down and buy it.

Ric

Cool. I'm glad I'm not joining it half way through.

I really enjoyed the last series and the ending when he had to say goodbye to Rose was quite sad. A very good series, and it will be a challenge to match it.

The special effects and makeup used to create the Spider Lady character were excellent.
My only complaint was that the dialogue written for her was poor. It could have been taken straight out of an old Batman script. She played a Villain not an Alien.
That said though,
The boys and I enjoyed it immensely.

It was good, reminded me a bit of the Planet of Spiders series where the doctor (John Pertwee) regenerated at the end to become the 4th Doctor (Tom Baker). They seem to have kept the costs down by filming in London instead of on a set. Dr Who has definietly gone up a few notches since the slump in the Colin Baker era.

Not bad - I like the new companion already. I'm still not sure about David Tennant though... I thought that Eccleston was more authoritative and generally made a better Doctor...... but I'm going to give him a go.

Ric
05-07-2007, 11:11 PM
I think that with David Tennant the writers are starting to explore a more darker side of the good Doctor that has been evident in a few episodes, it makes things a lot more interesting so long as they keep the balance.

As far as I'm concerned.....
Dr Who is a little like Jame Bond....
and no-one has mentioned Jon Pertwee.......

Gargoyle_Steve
06-07-2007, 03:29 AM
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jon_Pertwee

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_Doctor

http://www.jonpertwee.com/

Unfortunately Jon Pertwee died in 1996 .. he played the part of The Doctor (specifically the 3rd Doctor) from 1970 to 1974 ... and along with Tom Baker (who succeeded Jon by playing the 4th incarnation of The Doctor) they played the Doctor's that I grew up with, and through whom I came to know and love the character and the show.

Ironically tomorrow (July 7th) is the anniversary of Jon Pertwee's birthday - he would have been 88.
Sadly instead of Happy Birthday Jon it's R.I.P Jon ...

R.I.P William ... R.I.P Patrick ...

Even TimeLords are not immortal.

I have to say the new sereise is amazing.. Who would have though that about the Face of Boh... who can not die.. Wait and see it will surprise you. And who would have believed there might be another, but then where you have Sherlock you must have Moriarty. And those amazing Darleks can anything stop them from coming back. I need to get myself the old ones and watch them, I used to see it after school but I think most of that was Tom Barker onwards (repeats ofcourse). Not so long back I think the did start at the begining on ABC but I never got the chance to watch it. Are the old series on DVD?

We are all looking back in time, but imagine being able to travel through it. Just imagine.

Regards
