Great review Richard, and It was a pleasure to look through you telescope back in May. It was great to see so much detail in the DSO's and I recall the red star you pointed out in or around the Crux.

I thought it was a very good introductory user review too. Hopefully during the summer months someone can do a more technical review of the optics when the thick high expansion mirror will be more tested by the greater differnvce in day/night temps , and the astigmatism issues I saw can be investigated.

It's Meades idea and design, BUT..... Guan Sheng builds and assembles the whole thing in Taiwan.
I've heard some damning things about these scopes, mostly from the states and mainly related to delievery problems than design.
We seem to be very well looked after by our transport system and most of all our dealers (thanks Bintel, free plug:lol: )
There are a few design flaws, but these can be easily overcome.
Meade need to get their head out of the sand and take on the criticisms made by the owners. I doubt that the small changes that have to be made would cost them anymore.
It would certainly improve their public relations.
I've made these improvements to my 12"LB and I wouldn't part with it.
The views are spectacular and the convenient set up and take down are a real plus.:D

Thanks, guys for the nice comments. I didn't get technical because I am not a technician when it comes to mirror optics etc. As someone who has been looking through scopes since 1967 though, I think I can offer what the scope "feels" like. And this scope, for its price, "feels" great. I have noticed that Meade cop quite a hiding on Cloudy Nights from time to time. So much so that when I bought the LX200R THEN read the comments on CN, I nearly had a panic attack that I'd bought an absolute dud. But it was superb so I don't know what the yanks are on about some times. To my viewing eye this scope is the best thing I've had. The sheer "volume" of light that it gathers offsets any idiosyncracies that I can see, though Steve is right aboutthe slight astigmatism. But it sure flogs Galileo's scope for power - and look what he discovered!
