yep thats right, we are under attack again by yet another low pressure system. It has rained every day for 2 weeks. When will we get a break????

Personally I blame Tornado33 - he bought a planetary long exposure web cam:P

Batten down the hatches and stay off the roads.

So sick of this weather (although it's good to get rain).

Haven't had a clear imaging night since June 1st!

Hi all,
I am sympathetic to you all. Hopefully this wont be anywhere near as bad as the last one. No wind up here but completely clouded in and rain with it. Just as long as another comet doesn't come along to peave me off again. I think i've only had a week in total for viewing so far, even when fine we've had fog. Alice Springs is looking better all the time,LOL.
Wish you all well,
Duncan

The forecast they are giving us down here for your storm up there is that it will be worse than the last 2 !!!

125k damaging winds from Wollongong to the Hunter and torrential rain later today, tonight and into tomorrow morning :eyepop:

Also flood warnings and Snow Blizzards in Eastern Victoria!

It's a wild start to winter.

Take care people.

The BOM is describing this coming storm as an "extra-tropical cyclone".

This (http://www.weatherzone.com.au/models/index.jsp?lt=wzcountry&lc=aus&mt=gfs&mc=mslp&mso=0&mh=24&focus=mh) is the computer model for 10pm tonight, looks nasty!

lets see if its like this tomorrow morning. the ship was actually yawing and pivoting, so I hope those high seas and swell dont ruin things.

you can now get to the northern side of viewing the ship, but I am sure that this option will be cut off soon with the weather setting in again.

All ready started here on the far South Coast, the Barometer is dropping rapidly, down to 1003 HPa and dropping at 4 HPa/3Hr, belting down rain, visibility is down to about 1 NM to sea, heavy swell rolling in, all the street lights have come on. Just waiting for the wind to start now.

Cheers

I won't be disappointed if this buster blows down 1 of the 4 big gum trees surrounding my yard and blocking my sky, just so long as it doesn't fall on anyone or damage mine or anyone else's property. :D

Late last year there was a very severe electrical storm near my place - I would estimate seeing a lightning strike hit the ground about every 30 seconds or so. A couple of blocks from my house there was a huge gum tree in full blaze with flames shooting up maybe 10-15 metres above it. I had 4 gum trees in my yard (now I just have 3), the largest of the 4 in an 'aged' state, and driving home I actually felt fear that I would come home and see something wrong. Everything was fine, but a month later the tree was gone, I paid to have it removed. With these storms lashing the east coast I must say that I feel alot safer, and my views are alot better too  :)

Not quite yet David, barometer is now just over 1001 and still dropping at over 4 HPa/3Hr, rain is around 32mm/Hr, wind is still around 6 knots, later today it will get interesting.

Cheers

the natives up here are getting restless. We are being inundated with inquiry phone calls about drainage systems and channels. the suburbs hit by the flooding on the 8th are calling in. I think the trees would be more of the issue as I dont think we will get much more rain.... but I could be wrong.

Classic its taken 20 minutes to type this out. LOL one woman wants a guarantee that her house wont flood again? Geeze where do they get then from???

19-06-2007, 02:25 PM
you might just get your wish young man;) . you can "test" the soil around the base of the tree for likelyhood of failure. using a y-bar offcut or something metal like a golf club shaft or similar, you step off about a 1-3m from tree base and insert the "probe" into the earth. if it easily enters up to 30cm with the first "push" then dont stand too close to that tree in a wind. You will find the soil and subsurface has become supersaturated and the "grip" that the tree has on the surrounding soil is significantly reduced. So much so that the canopy will act as a sail and well hey presto, vacant sky, ok minus a fence or two and a slightly remodelled home, but you could have a view.... ;)

Everyone in the storm front please take shelter in your house (away from windows).

Reports are coming in on the news that its getting very bad up there and is going to get worse.

Don't go driving around in it!

Take care

Interesting!

I thought of you when I wrote that, Houghy!

I had visions of the Storm blowing trees down, roof sheets flying across the streets and horizontal needle rain . . . . and there was Houghy driving around taking photos of it all

Funny how you are the one I imagined driving around in it, and you are the one who answered the post about it

This might sound a bit weird but it would be rather interesting to experience an ECL like this. As a storm chaser I am always up for a bit of weather lashing. Looks like its gonna be a wee bit nasty.

If you like could some of it be sent over here. Our soils are still dry and our small creek which should have been flowing for a month now is still bone dry.

best wishes

On the news at the moment they're saying it may not be as bad as first predicted.. good news! Only 70km/h instead of 100+!

Predicted to hit Sydney in an hour or two.

Talk about bizzare weather, full blown gale last night with driving rain and huge seas, 0500 this morning and the sky suddenly cleared, we have just a few showers out to sea, huge swell and clear blue skies with a gentle southerly blowing. :screwy:

Cheers

Here ya go... sorry, there's not much of a selection. I was running seriously late for work this morning so I just snapped the truck before I left.

I've just got back from out around Shooters Hill and Black Springs. We went straight out for a drive this arvo in the hopes that there'd still be some good snow and photo opportunities, but it's pretty much gone and the light was well past it's best... maybe tomorrow night!:D
