Hi Space Fans
Finally back on line after 2 weeks without ADSL.
I made the mistake of upgrading from a 512k to 1.5meg connection.
Here is the story:
- Had a 512k connection
- Found out from a friend that Telstra don't do them anymore.(would have been good to hear that from telstra !)
- Same cost for a 1.5meg connection
- Easy I thought
- 2 weeks later & after many phone calls to telstra  .
- I finally talk to a helpful techy, who does a reset at the telstra end & all is good.

So be warned, if you are on a 512K connection & want more speed.

Any speed faster than this pathetic bush dialup would be a bonus, man I
can only dream of 512k connection. Were still stuck on 28k here

Welcome Back Ian :hi:

I am on 100.0 Mbps. Is that good?

Thanks Ken
I think that is good !
100,000,000 bit/sec
=100,000 bytes/sec
= 100 Kilo Bytes/sec (KB)
= a download speed of 6 MegaBytes (MB) / Minute
Sounds very good to me :eyepop:

Based on an update I just did, my download speed is 3 Megabytes/Minute
Speed will of course always vary depending on the size of the download.
Downloads are alway throttled back by the ISP (well Telstra do anyhow!) as the length of the download increases.
Typical speeds start at 100k/sec & throttle back to 40 to 60kb/ sec.

Ken,

only about 3571 times faster than my dialup, I'd say that's pretty good
fastastic infact... never knew people were getting residential connections
that fast.

 and I thought it was a bit slow!

Ken, that sounds like the speed of your local area network - between you and your router. Either that or Ballarat/Snake Valley are keeping a big secret from the rest of Australia?

I just tested my speeds using:-

http://www.speedtest.net/

Download = 1.34 Mbps; Upload = 0.21 Mbps

I too have been stuck on dialup for a week, moved to a new house.
I had to download a 16MB file while on dialup, it took 2 and a half hours...DSL for the same file is 42 seconds.

ADSL was turned on this afternoon, bit disappointed in it really....

Bit slower than my old connection, used to get 700+ KB/s there.

I had a similar problem after upgrading. I rang Bigpond Technical Services - they agreed, checked the line and found that the change had not been made at the local exchange - fixed that day and up to full speed.

I'm a bit 'sus of that speed tester we've all used. Try the one I first mentioned below and see what result you get cf ozspeedtest???

Here's my test result with Erics link. The numbers mean nothing to me, you guys probably understand it all.

Ken, you got:-

Download = 0.44 Mbps; Upload = 0.11 Mbps

I got:-

Download = 1.34 Mbps; Upload = 0.21 Mbps

So I'm somewhat faster, but I am on ADSL2 and less than a km from a fairly modern city exchange. I'm supposed to have 1.5 Mbps download speed. :mad2:

Hi Mike
You sound like you are in the same boat as I was.
Are you with Telstra ?
If you are game you can upgrade to 1.5 meg for the same price as 512K !

I'm on a 512k ADSL line..... from the figures above I'm guessing that many (though not specified) are on 1.5Mb services.

From http://www.ozspeedtest.com/bandwidth/ :

Test run on 21/06/2007 @ 12:46 PM
Mirror: Internode
Data: 9 MB
Test Time: 172.63 secs
Your line speed is 438 kbps (0.44 Mbps).
Your download speed is 55 KB/s (0.05 MB/s).

From http://www.speedtest.net/ :

Result: 395 kb/s download, 108 kb/s upload
