I wandered along to the Mackay star show at Kinchant dam last night and met some very nice blokes.
The stars showed up on time and, as we were each observing our 'targets' a car load of folks came along to join in; two girls and a boy, the three, aged about 11-13 and three adults. The kids came up to me, their tiny torches showing their way. One girl asked me if she could look through my 'scope, which was great. Then, with the 'ice broken' the others joined in with gusto. They mingled with the other blokes to see all sorts of sky attractions. The ooohs! and aaahs! from them was a delight; they saw the rings of Saturn, Jupiter and 4 moons, M51, The Jewel Box, NGC 5139, NGC3372 etc. etc.
It was extremely gratifying to see these youngsters and their parents enjoy the sights, moreso because the kids' manners were impeccable, their enthusiasm was boundless and their demenour, flawless. I later lerned that they were members of the Mackay chapter of the Double Helix club.
One thing I know, when they grow up, this country will be in very safe hands.
