Last nights aurora event Oct 7, 2024.
Still image sequence from the most active part of the storm, which only lasted about 20 minutes from 22:42 - 23:04 AEDT [11:42-12:04 UT].

Video covers longer period. Time span marked on title sequence.

All exposures: Pentax K1 ISO1600 15s Pentax 50mm f1.7 @ f2.8

Auroral activity before midnight usually sees the beams and pillars migrating from east to west. Morning displays move west to east. But last nights mid evening display can clearly be seen moving west to east more typical of a morning display.

Nice images Joe, so this was Monday evening into this morning then. Had been watching the prediction sites and after the no show of Sunday morning that was supposed to be kp7 / G3 , had given up. You must enjoy living out there and having regular sky shows lately.

Thanks Jeff,
Yes Monday night. I just watched the local magnetometer readings while watching TV. When it went high, I walk out of the deck and take a shaky hand held test shot. When I see red, I put the camera on the tripod and start a sequence.

Kp is more an indicator for northern hemisphere. When the magnetic field reading drops below -800, it’s worth a try. This one was about -1400nT. The Gannon event was perhaps -3000 to -4000nT.

Thank you so much Leo.

Regards

Joe

Just out of curiosity, which magnetometer gauges are you watching or do you have your own.

Glendale App

As Peter says, Glendale app. You have to give it access to location services so it can track you and it feeds you data from the nearest magnetometer. In my case, Canberra.
