As we approach the shortest day of 2024 I decided to review a few images I was fond of in the last year.

I rather liked this one (https://www.atscope.com.au/BRO/gallery650.html) but it seems the judging panel for APOTY16 thought otherwise.

As, thinking of short, the Greenwich APOTY16 shortlist should be released soon (early July? )

It will be interesting to see who/what did make the cut!

Wow - how good do they have to be?

You just have to create an image that stands out from the 5000 or so entries from 90 countries. Like that insurance selling meerkat likes to say: "simple yes?"

Maybe a super resolution image taken with one of these knocked you out : https://soleye.eu/telescopes

There is some amazing custom H-alpha gear and imagery coming out of Europe at the moment.

I'd like to convert my AP155 to a dual pressure tuned etalon system and use its full aperture but it would need a custom telecentric lens system and adapters for the Lunt etalons.

Not something I could knock up my Bunnings Ryobi drill kit!

What an incredible shot! I could stare at (photos of) the sun for hours, nice work :D

Great shot, Peter.

But if that wasn't shortlisted it makes me wonder what the competition is offering.

So in order to have something more outstanding than your image you must be loaded and have the best most expensive equipment? Sounds fair.....
Your image is awesome I can only imagine what the others must look like

That would be a very complex optical train, probably more expensive than the soleye300 and without the theoretical resolution of the later.
