I have had a message from Sandy (Alex's Daughter) to advise that Alex passed away this morning, in his sleep, due to heart failure. The ongoing cancer battle, and the demands of Chemo, wore him down. Sandy wanted me to pass on how much Alex had learned from the IIS community, and he was always talking about the support and friendships that the community had given him, both in astronomy and in his health battle.

I will miss him terribly.

I have always enjoyed reading Alex's posts.

He was often outside of the box in how he treated the subject matter, and as such, got me thinking in a different way.

Alex was not afraid to express himself, and found himself banned from this forum at least once. But he always bounced back, larger than life .

I regret not to have met him in person, and will miss his contributions.

Rest in Peace, Alex.

Just read this post and my condolences to Alex's family and friends that knew him well. I never met Alex but have followed his Astro journey on this forum since I joined IIS several years ago. His posts were always informative and his stories frequently humorous, his encouragement to beginners, his compassion and thoughtfulness and positive nature were very endearing and I will miss his presence here. May you rest in peace now Alex, with the understanding of life and the universe no longer a mystery.

Incredibly sad news but also not surprising. He had been battling for a long time. Though I only knew him via IIS I feel a real sense of loss. I remember years ago expressing confidence that he would fulfil his dream of sailing solo around the world. He was already ailing but I felt that his positive attitude would see him succeed. That didn't happen but he never lost that 'I can do this' attitude that made him so inspiring.

When the great cricket commentator Allan McIlvrey passed away he was honoured with the song 'The game is not the same without McIlvrey.' I'm not about to burst into song but IIS will not be the same without Alex. He was a great person and I'll miss him.

Good bye Alex, you were a good hearted, entertaining, intriguing and intelligent member of Ice In Space and so many of us will miss your huge gamut of contributions, some cool, some strange, some quirky, sometimes even "what that Fu is he talking about?" and "Did he just say that?" and often very long contributions  ...but all wonderful :)

I know you liked your food photos mate, so here is a last departing Eagleview concoction, from Sunday night, this time lamb shanks with red wine and Chorizo sausages. The two empty seats at the table and two glasses of red, a reminder of what we never did get to share in person but always hoped too :( :astron:

Rest in peace my friend :hi: :drink:

After starting this Condolence thread, and seeing the responses pour in, I had provided a link to Alex's family so they could follow the expressions of appreciation of Alex's life and contribution to this community.

Yesterday I had a message back from Sandy, and I am including it here (below), for all to read.

"Thanks Glen, Sascha and I have read the posts and are very touched by all the comments. I don't know how to get onto the forum so please pass on our thanks to everyone for their kind words. Regards Sandy.

I read all the comments, over 4000, it brought tears to my eyes. Its wonderful, inspirational, and a pleasure to think that as a online community who share a common passion, that one person who most of us probably have never met in person but have had interaction with for many years, has touched all of us in one way or another, and genuinely earned the respect of his peers. Thank you all :)

Well said, Trevor,
I always enjoyed Alex's posts. Always positive, and thought provoking, and sometimes way out in the left field.
But I think it's a measure of the man that I don't recall ever reading a negative or belittling or derogatory response from other IIS members.
Whether agreeing with Alex or not, he received respect.
Cheers Phil
