But you wouldn't believe this until you saw it...

Rockets were built to kill, but then it propelled man to the moon.....this technology would be useful for testing on Near Earth Objects on a much grander scale.....

The escalating threat scenario is what bankrupted the USSR and put what the developed in the hands of some of the lunatics out there.

Perhaps if we spent the money on feeding the hungry and improving there standard of living we will reduce the number of people who threaten us. And if we do have the moral high ground lets make defensive instruments rather than offensive ones. That could not be used for attack.

I think it would be better if all our 'leaders' were forced by law to send their children to public schools, use public transport, use public hospitals etc. Then if they declare war or get involved in a war all their children and relatives children must go first.

By the way metal storm is a throw away ordinance where many 'bullets ' are in the same barrel separated by 'propellant' which is electronically detonated in a sequential manner so the shock waves do not have time to interact. A large array of these barrels can deliver astounding firing rates.

It can theoretically put a bullet for every 200mm in one strafing run by an aircraft. You can run but you can't hide!

That is one scary weapon.
If people want to go to war send them off with swords, sandals and a shield and see how many want to go then. But sadly it probably wouldn't change anything.

I trained in the Navy as a Helicopter Door Gunner to go to Vietnam and we used twin M-60 machine guns, then came the mini gun, now the super mini gun, look here to see what mankind can do, would hate to be on the receiving end of this::shrug: , makes you wonder.

All these weapons are chicken feed compared to nuclear weapons still. I would still fear an army willing to drop one single nuke more than an army willing to stick these types of guns in operation within it's military branches.

An intro to the weapons system, the future weapons will only hit what there meant to hit. Another good Aussie invention that will be sold to the US when we should be selling it. As long as there are humans there will be war, best to be on the winning side :thumbsup:

These weapons are awesome and make one wonder why someone would volunteer to be in the armed forces. Then I speak with an Aussie soldier who is keen to get into the action as it's a little boring at home???

I recently saw about 20 minutes of footage taken by an insurgent sniper (Juba) in Iraq, with one U.S. soldier after another falling to the ground or falling into his tank accompanied by joyous music. Then I hear that one of my wife's American family members is joining the army to gain financial assistance to complete her studies.

I'm sure this would be a less crazy world if we had less crazy leaders.

To be fair, this weapon could indeed be used as a strictly defensive measure. The excellent Australian author John Birmingham wrote a book called Weapons of Choice, in which the navy of 2021 features Metal Storm defense points. Basically, they target and destroy any incoming projectiles, including artillery shells.

The rule of thumb used to be 1 tracer round every 5 or 10 standard rounds(depending on a particular weapons speed of fire). I don't know what the tracer to normal projectile ratio is in those miniguns, but imagine how many rounds are actually being fired if we're only seing the tracers!

Expensive shooting ... how much does one round cost?
Killing must not only be effective and efficient but also cost effective.... this is the human way.

I wonder what one single round costs as one could work out how many minutes it could take to blow a million bucks.... $1 a round in theory in a minute one million dollars...50 cents 2 minutes to blast away a million...and so on...
It could be very expensive in a war if you think it thru... shooting incoming stuff is a good idea but it would be metal rain in the combat zone

You can never stop guns with more guns, this only gives more money to those who make guns. They at some point will sell the guns to"the other side" so you will need to buy better guns.

Why not ask the brave question what are we afraid of? Who benefits from our fear and division?

Wire netting would be cheaper than one burst at 180 rounds per minute... and it may keep the P platers out of your veggie garden as well... what are P platers doing in the garden with the rabbits is what I would like to know.
