Posting on behalf of Peter Allison, president of the Brisbane Astronomical Society (BAS)

Over recent years, Sunshine Coast BAS member, Dr Ken Wishaw, has been working extensively with the Sunshine Coast Regional council toward the creation of a Dark Sky Reserve in the Sunshine Coast hinterland Obi Obi Valley region. Council is now evaluating whether to proceed to a formal application under the International Dark Sky Places Program.

As part of its evaluation process Council is seeking community comment via a “have your say” page on their website at:

https://haveyoursay.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.a u/dark-sky

The page will be open for comments from May 20 to June 16.

The number of completed surveys and nature of comments are critical to determining whether the council will proceed with this initiative.

Brisbane City Council has stated it does not see light pollution as an issue it needs to address. However, the Sunshine Coast Regional council may be our best hope for protecting some of the south east Queensland night sky.

Could you please make you membership aware of the "have your say" page and encourage maximum participation in the survey. It is in all our interest.
Many thanks,

Peter

I'm not a resident of QLD, but have been known to occasionally frequent the Montville / Kenilworth area from time to time on holiday. Happy to add my voice to support a dark sky site anywhere!
