Bought Fc76DCU In Tokyo, Now to Bring it Home

Hi All

Walked into star base 30 min before closing today and walked out with a 76DCU plus tube holder. Ken was a pleasure to deal with and told me he was in Aus last summer where he loved our night sky. Gave us couple of file pickets with images he took with a 76DCU. Was tempted to go with the DS but was bulkier, more expensive and really didn’t need it for my use.

He advised me best was to transport the scope was to split it in half, cap each end with supplied caps, carry on the primary end and check in the other end with plenty of clothing around.

Wondering what everyone done in similar situation. I’m happy to purchase a carry on duffle bag and fill it with bubble wrap, clothing and both pieces. Assuming they won’t let me carry it in its box which is a shame. I’m even going to flatten the box and put it with my luggage.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'd follow Ken's advice and carry-on the objective end while checking in the rest. I've flown with mine exactly like that a number of times.

Haha I would have bought a fancier one if I had that kind of money.

If you can split in length, stick it in a camera bag or similar that’s well padded.

Cabin crew will often stash delicate items for you in their storage cupboards if you ask nicely when onboard, but if it’s in a well padded bag it’ll be fine in the overheads usually.

Sorry I mean carry on. I’m going to buy a hard shell carry on luggage now and get as much bubble wrap and clothing in there.
