Melbourne 1945 to now - comparison map

I found this interesting link of a before and after map of Melbourne:

Put it on a full screen desktop computer.
You can move the slider left or right to compare 1945 to now,
You can use the thumb wheel on your mouse to expand the size,
You can use the left click to hold the mouse to hold a position on the map and move it.

I can clearly see places I know well now, were farm land back in 1945.
I don't know if there's one for Sydney?

It's not quite as intuitive as dragging a slider left and right, but "Queensland Globe" https://qldglobe.information.qld.gov.au/ provides overlays of aerial imagery going back to 1936 in some areas. It can be quite fascinating going back in time through the sequence of images to see how your home town has changed over the years.

Yea, I was there yesterday, I had to pick up someone from Peter Mac Hospital, haven't been there for a few years.

Hi Allan,
Yes, I've checked all four places my parents and I lived at - and they were all empty rural land back then.

It was interesting checking the old church I remember from when I was young, which was ripped down.

Then I looked down at Sweet Water Creek Southern Branch that runs through our backyard in Frankston South, and it's still the same now as it was back then. Of course, where our house is now, was empty rural land back then too.

My wife had fun too - looking up her old place in Bundoora, which back in 1945 seemed like a buffer zone around the Larundel Mental Asylum.

I posted your link in the Frankston Facebook Notice board, and a few people found it amazing too.

P.S. - I also checked out where I used to work - Ammuntion Factory Footscray (across the river and up a bit from Flemington Race Course) - which was a huge establishment back in 1945. It was still big when I worked there in the 90s, but a fraction of what it had been during the War.

That's a great map, I was wondering recently how dark Mount Macedon would have been when Hartung made his observations and that map makes it very clear that he probably wouldn't have had any light pollution from Melbourne on the horizon.

There seems to be some omission there.
When I worked there we made cartridge cases for ships and tanks, fuzes for assorted heavy guns, grenades, shoulder rockets and rifle and pistol ammunition. The small arms ammunition was filled and tested on site, while the other bigger components were sent to be filled at St Marys. It says the factory closed down in 1994 - but I was still there in 1995, my office being where the Aldi car park is now.

And another bit of history - the movie "Romper Stomper" was filmed in the old closed down plant at the back of the property. The film crew would have lunch in our canteen - but not the actors.

Not wrong Leon! We were in the city yesterday and today to see Grease (good show!), but wow, I was aghast at all the changes and the general vibe. So glad we moved to the country, the lack of change and progress(for progress sake) suits me perfectly now.
