Hi Guys, We Have a Problem

Hi Guys, well we dont really have the problem, but i do.

Now I have just bought an Williams Optics 80Fd scope, and a great little scope it is too.

While fiddling with a small grub screw and turning it inwards it proceed past the point of no return and ended up inside the scope. :eyepop:

What I would like to know is this, would it be much of a problem to remove the focuser from the scope and retrieve it, or would i be looking for more trouble.

The grub screw has no effect on the performance of the scope, but i know it is there, and can hear it rattle.

It may be easier to remove the front lens.
It shouldn't be too difficult.

I am no expert but I think you need to get it out of there. Given that it is common practice to replace/upgrade focusers, it should be ok to remove it.
But lets wait for the experts.

Edit: Vince beat me to it, yes these scopes are made such that the front assemble can be upgraded/removed.

I wouldn't leave it in there as it could bounce around on the front element and damage the coatings.

On my WO 80mm Megrez ED II, both the focuser and the entire lens cell just unscrew off, leaving the naked, metal OTA open ended at both ends.

Just be careful that you do not cross thread anything when you screw the focuser or lens cell back in place, the threads are relatively fine, like pipe threads.

Many thanks guys, i will have a good look at it and see what is the best method of removal, and i still don't quite know what that little grub screw is for, because it really dosen't do anything.

Leon if it is anything like the 10:1 WO focuser I bought and it is on the top of the barrel of the focuser then it could be for the finderscope foot. With my 10:1 the finder foot can be switched from oneside to the other simply by removing the grubscrew and screwing in the focuser foot.

Can you post an image of where the grub screw should be normally?

My ZS110 has the samer construction, so I think that's the way to go.

Thanks Geoff, I will give that a try, and Paul the grub screw is no where near the focuser, but on top of the focuser barrel near the connection point of the focuser and the main tube.

This is why i fiddled with it, because it really dose nothing, I thought it may have been a tightning screw of something, so as i started to screw it down gently to see what it did, it disappeared inside the tube.

That seems the same as mine then. If you take you focuser bracket off you may see a screw with an allen key head that holds the focuser foot to the focuser barrel. If it is like, that then that is what the other grub screw if for.
