1) how much weight can this comfortably hold in portrait mode ?
2) what is used to connect this to the top of a tripod ?

The Sirui spec's say it can carry a 20kg payload.
The bigger the ball, the bigger the payload.
I have no reason to doubt the spec's
It easily carried my Sony A7R with any number of lens combinations, including telephoto lens.
The base has a 3/8" female thread, which allows it to attach to any photo tripod with a 3/8" stud.
A very well made ball head, perfect for landscape photography, when you need a level horizon, but the ground is uneven....

Ok, a common 3/8", cool.
I seen it can carry up to 20kg but maybe I need to be clearer on my question, sorry, I have a ball head pistel grip on a camera tripod which I adapt to my EQ Star-Tracker sometimes with the Canon 70-200mm 'L' lens, heavy sucker, going portrait on star-tracker may only need 60-80 degree down on the ball head, means the ball head does not reach the resting point in that shaft slot, soo, my pistel grip starts to slide down during exposures,, ?

Also, what are them knobs for and what are the calibration numbers on the larger knob for, are they tensioning marks for the actual ball ?
Thnx
