The Flying Lizard in the SMC (Volantem Lacertae)

A rarely imaged gem, the "Flying Lizard" is an enormous region of nebulosity and star clusters in one of the closest galaxies to the Milky Way, the Small Magellanic Cloud. Sitting quite a bit away from the core of the galaxy, this one is incredibly faint and slips by on most quick scans of survey data.

Still quite incredible to me that an average joe in a suburban backyard can capture images of nebula in another galaxy. What can I say, living in the 21st century is awesome.

Presented in a foraxx HOO blend with RGB stars.


Around 41hrs of narrowband, heavily biased towards Ha, and just over an hour of RGB.

Hi Adam, I just saw this on Astrobin. Awesome rendition. The image is well processed with a warmer tone. The stars look really nice with colour in their cores. Colour saturation and hues are spot on in my opinion. An overall excellent capture, well done!
