View Full Version here: : Flashing Star
Just spotted a light that seems to flash every 35 or so seconds in the north western sky from upper hunter NSW location. Just wondering if anyone else has seen it or has an explanation for it...
Thanks
Hi Julian,
It is a geostationary satellite that is rotating. As the sun reflects off its
solar panels and bodies, it will appear to blink like a lighthouse.
It's apparent position will be close to the celestial equator.
Several satellites that service Australian telecommunications are parked along that region in the sky to the north.
Since these orbit at 35,786 km they can fall outside the shadow of the Earth and be visible very late at night.
It's fun to observe them at magnification. They will appear to be still within the FOV whilst the background stars drift by.
