Conspiracy theorists are generally nut jobs because they think if they form an opinion they need no evidence what so ever...
I suppose that is not entirely the case with say JFK stuff as at least they start with a bullet...something tangible
The conspiracies I find entirely laughable are those that have no evidence and defy all logic if they were some how true...for example that 'big pharma" (the use of such a term heralds a fool is about to speak) have the cure for cancer but they keep it secret because they can profit pushing their phoney drugs.
What rubbish...do these idiots expect you to believe there is no money to be made from a legitimate cancer cure...but they don't think ... they are just happy to believe the latest dribble from their favourite liar web site.
Why is the need for evidence lost on these fools...
So have you heard of a good unsupported conspiracy recently?

Exactly ..... and they're from the Pharma Industry and at some point, many many years well before the lawsuits there would have been little if any available public evidence and yet a conspiracy prevailed.

I am not sure of the point you are making...do you know what was the original conspiracy? When did it surface and why?
My point is ..until there is evidence it is no more than make believe irrespective of what finally is exposed with evidence...
I have noticed, at the risk of generalising, a conspiracy theorist forms an opinion and holds to that opinion without evidence and speaks about his opinion as thought it were fact ..clearly once there is evidence it moves out of the conspiracy theory to become some sort of allegation with supporting evidence.
alex
I was countering part of the original premise in your first post.
Without going back to various sources, I recall they were engaged in inflating the benefits and downplaying the disbenefits and illegally promoting with falsified data and some "help" from physicians the benefits of their drugs. It is widely credited as creating a / another drug epidemic through legal and illegal use and sale which killed tens of thousands. Their "story" is well documented in the media, in depositions and in the courts. The story has it roots in the mid 80s ?, possibly earlier.

A few favourites:
1. Flat Earth - despite overwhelming physical evidence, it still persists
2. Moon Landing faked - similar to above but, compounded by the claim that the USA bribed the Russians into not telling anyone with secret trade deals... Yeah, sure... I can see that holding up...
3. My personal favourite strings together a couple of conspiracies centred around the supposed UN goal of one world government:
So, this one claims that under agenda 21 the UN is plotting for a one world government... (this starts to fall over when you actually read any of agenda 21, especially since it is a non-binding concept. However, it really gets hot when two other interesting & similar conspiracies enter the frey... namely that the funding for this supposed agenda is coming from George Soros... a jew... hangon... this is where it gets particularly interesting...
Added to the above, some claim that the UN is seeking to promote / force Islam upon the entire world also as part of it's one world government agenda...
Now.. put this together...
One world government, dominated by the Islamic religion, funded by a Jew...
Let that concept sink in for a minute...
Notwithstanding that there actually is nothing of substance in the idea of a UN driven one world government but, the idea that a Jew would fund the domination of the world by Islam?? WTF??
Anyways, there sure are some crazies out there....

Conspiracy theories typically propose that the official explanation or mainstream understanding of the event is inaccurate or intentionally misleading, while lacking credible evidence and often relying on speculation, rumors, and mistrust of authoritative sources.
I don't see how this applies to Purdue Pharma. What they did is well known and well researched, isn't it?

Just google up "Santos Bonacci"
I don't know if this poor fellow could be in the class of a "Good" conspiracy theorist....he expounds on everything from Flat earth to Sovcit and everything in between.....
I'm also torn about sharing the info - it just gives him airtime.
watching his youtube videos however, is a laugh-riot of pseudo scientific drivel, well worth watching if you like idiots shooting themselves in the foot.
Coupla salient facts about poor 'ole santos...
- He had to abscond Australia due to over $130k in unpaid traffic fines...
- He has about 280k youtube subscribers around the globe (see what i did there)
- youtube comments are switched off on his channel
AND
(one for all the astrophotographers out there)
- he said on one of his videos he would give $10,000 to anyone who could give him a genuine, unaltered, un-faked photo of a spherical earth.
(to which i expect he would always flatly deny the veracity of any such photo)
I have upped the ante and offered him $1M if he can provide the same for a flat earth.( I have not yet recieved a response)
As I said to Alex, I was countering PART of the premise in his original post. Read his post, read mine and you should see some counterpoint.

JA I submit that a reply of one word surely can not qualify as a counter point when you offer that single word as the entirety of your arguement and I suggest such brevity can not be overlooked as you leave it to the reader to fit that one word into a context that you have not defined and so perhaps you can be specific and outline a counter point with some meat on the bone such that readers can understand exactly what point you are offering a counter point:D
It is cloudy here so I have ample time to consider your reply, that is assuming it is cloudy in your location and are similarly well placed to deal with this matter;).

I suspect many nut jobs are nut jobs to attract attention ( read money).
I can take a photo of the spherical Earth out my door ..you can't see the curvature but the fact is the photo would be of part of a spherical Earth...
AND then we had poor old "Mad Mike" having fun with his steam powered rocket and funding his hobby and life style pandering to the gullible flat Earth mob...he no more believed in a flat Earth than I do but he recognised a meal ticket in a flash.
Another conspiracy I heard of ages ago....wind farms in the USA were secret bases for China to hide troops...now that is laughable but so many gullible fools believed that story...
About a year ago someone sent me an article stating China would be bankrupt in 28 days..he believed it because he wanted to believe it however it did not happen and reminding this person about it draws no response...a blank look is all you get..hullo are you still awake?....and that's the way it goes they forget about the predictions of doom because that was last month and this month their liar web site has given them a new conspiracy to focus upon...and these folk wallow in fear and anger never realising they are mere sheep being manipulated thru fear, anger and hate..losers...
AND you can usually quickly tell if a stroy is just more rubbish because there is always a lack of evidence...
AND so often these types hate science and have no appreciation of the benefits of the scientific method...evidence etc..
Anyways farmers need sheep.

The one that always has me rolling my eyes is "Chemtrails"
Easily disproven that they are actually a deliberate distribution of any substance rather than a natural outcome of pressures and temperatures, and just as silly unless you believe in homeopathy where the greater the dilution, the greater the effectiveness or strength. I can't think of much greater dilution than "Spraying" some supposedly mind or body altering substance from an aircraft ten kilometers up in the air.
Yet to the true believers, there is literally nothing you can say or do which will change their position from "But they are chemtrails sheeple"
Zombie vaccines. Everyone who took an MRNA vaccine will die, within 12 months, no 18, wait next year sometime.

Several years ago I was listening to an interview with a professor of psychology on the ABC. He wrote a book about soft diplomacy in relation to his speciality. The way one counties influence over to another usually by the arts, movies, music ect. Like back in the fifties here in Australia, Young men dressed and looked, and behaved like James Dean. Well, according to him, the next wave from the USA would be a form of psychosis. Depression swept the world followed by anorexia nervousa and now schizophrenia. He wasn't kidding. He claimed they started in the States. Insane conspiracy theories reflect a growing mental illness problem. They are mostly political propaganda demonising the opposition. But there effect can be catastrophic. It seems the best we can do is calmly state the truth as we see it.

When you think about the statistics for folk suffering some form of mental illness it is rather sad...statistics are of little use in getting a real idea of the situation but I have read numbers for both USA and Australia that range from 20 % to 40% have or have had a mental health issue...then think of the rampant substance abuse..from prescribed stuff to alcohol and illegal drugs...billions of dollars tell the story of consumption..go to say Dan Murphy the booze supermarket..there are folk lining up at the cash register with their shopping trolley full of booze..really how good could you rate their ability to think.... add in the people's opiate and one wonders if it is safe to leave the house...well its not..I was near run over in the car park by a lady talking on her phone completly obivious to the world...she nearly crushed me and my walker...no appology just kept talking on the phone and kept driving..
Folk think I am crazy when I say fiction should be banned but surely fiction provides the machinery to ignore the truth...such a world is un imaginable but I bet it would work out better...introduce the notion that if you make a claim you must offer credible evidence in support...we have lived with fiction for so long we just accept it..but it is just lies nothing more than lies...
The damage done by the fantasies out of Hollywood is clear yet we suck it up...guns hot cars disrespect for females, mindless violence, witchcraft, ghosts ...the list is long ...our sad culture is generated from such swill...and folk just dont see it.
I will not watch/read fiction.
It is just BS out of a mind that often has no real life experience ...of course some stuff I see... Lord of the Rings movies cause it was a family outing...but I don't need or want fantasy... heck give me stories that are real about real people...the supply is inexhaustable...why the need to suck up swill is beyond me...
Can't folk find decent entertainment free of lies?
Imagine a world where folk rejected fiction which is no more than lies upon lies.
AND stop folk quoting a fictional character as authority or wisdom...like quoting Sherlock homes...does that not underline the damage done to clear thinking by fiction when folk turn to a fictional character as authority...
Get rid of make believe...no proof it ain't real...Imagine where humans would be if they were bound to deal with only truth.

Just read the comments from the nutters who read sky news and other Murdoch rags on facebook and other social media to see how many conspiracy nuts there are.
Best one I have read is about how all the rail and road tunnels being built in Melbourne and Sydney was used to harbour displaced children and deformed humans so that politicians could "have their way with them (https://theconversation.com/what-lies-beneath-tunnels-for-trafficking-or-just-a-subterranean-service-time-to-rescue-these-spaces-from-the-conspiracists-144276)" and they used the lockdowns as a way of transporting them without being seen through the tunnels.

Hi Folks,
I'm not suggesting you get your news from Netflix, (please cross check as you see fit: court documents, depositions, other media, etc...), but as you can see from the trailer, there's an upcoming August 10 Release of PainKiller (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24-YonhNS0Y) a Netflix, dramatised "documentary" I suppose of the Purdue Pharmaceuticals story / crime I mentioned earlier in the thread.
From the trailer it appears as if it follows on from or is a precis of a few other similar, but older (2021?), 2 parts documentaries along a similar vein from HBO (I think also available on Foxtel)...The Crime of the Century (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SkU75sBdjdU)

The sovereign Citizenship devotees are the ones for me not only do they hold a particular view .. they follow it up with multi layered actions that ultimately ruin themselves.
The people we see arrested roadside for not displaying number plates or following lawfull directions .. most often are also
Locked in protracted legal battles with government for unpaid rates ,fines, etc, probably going to have all there assets sold off to clear the council debt plus costs.
Am unsure of an answer but these people are clearly mentally unwell the person who gets ejected out the end of all this is likely going to be more unstable and dangerous to be around
xelasnave
25-08-2023, 06:31 PM
Yes the sovereign citizens...they have this crazy idea that the law can be found in a legal dictionary..but typical of folk who think they know the law because they have made it up themselves or read something on the net...
In the USA ( maybe elsewhere as well) the sovereign citizens claim they do not have to have a licence or registration (re car) because they are not using their vehicle for commerce...heck if only...AND they have the stupiditybto tell the Police they don't know the law...they may not be High Court Judge material but they know a fair bit.
One thing I have noticed with conspiracy theorists is they claim to be open minded but will never consider both sides of a proposition and that is understandable given their world is one of make believe...
AND sadly conspiracies is a billion dollar business in the USA ( and probably else where)
with many gullible folk believing whatever these folk put out...because they want to..confirmation bias runs rampant with them.
MY point is simply this..no doubt mischief abounds in the world but any claim must have supporting evidence..that really is the basis of our law and our science...if you can not offer reasonable evidence you are simply playing make believe.

The sad reality is that so many of these folk have some sort of mental disorder which is not surprising when you look at the numbers to find that mental illness can visit many people in their life time and for some it is a permanent issue.
Such underlying issues can make growing up painful for them and leave them with a negative view of the world and particularly humanity and mainstream knowledge...these folk are most susceptible to conspiracy tales.
AND it does seem that there are various media outlets that target folk with fearful propositions that can only add to their confusion.
Then say in the case of the sovereign citizen type you get what you can call a critical mass where there is enough of them to tell each other they are right..social media etc helps these folk to find each other and convince themselves they are right....also folk do like to think they are special and privy to knowledge that mainstream denies the " sheeple"...how they love that term...when they use it they feel special of course, when in truth so often it is that they are just hopelessly ignorant of normality....
So often those who use the term " sheeple" are members of a cult or group that is indeed a group of folk who could only be described as sheep due to their inability to rationalise they are following unsupported dogma which they must never question...
Anyways it still is a wonderful world as evidenced by the fact that we are just so much better off than folk from the past...yet there are still folk who see the world as being the worst it has ever been...sadly thru plain ignorance and an inability to process information that contradicts their beliefs.
It is my casual observation and perhaps a gross generalisation that conspiracy types have not enjoyed what they consider to be sucessful lives and are on the continual look out to find fault with most everything and everybody but rather than face up to the fact that the problem starts and invaribly ends at their door step they seek conspiracy as the evil force that holds them back.
If only they could realise success is no more than taking and accepting personal responsibility and looking to fix ones issues rather than abdicating all responsibility for ones actions.
alex

The main thing to remember when judging the world such as I have been doing is just how limited our experience with other people really is...I had careers that saw me meeting new folk every day and in situations where I would learn a great deal about them and hence one can easily believe one has a vast experience and therefore a wide knowledge of people...now of course I have met more folk than many but when you work out the numbers you realise even if you have met a thousand fold more than most that you still have only met a very small number of the world population and so you must conceed you really don't know that much....without humility wisdom has no home.
AND then there are the folk who have one negative experience say with a policeman or public servant, lawyer or doctor and in their wisdom pronounce all in that group are the same... they base their view on one interaction...and even if they had hundreds they still really know nothing of the overall group...such a pity folk generalise and I hate it when I find myself doing that...it is just plain wrong.
AND so maybe I have been too harsh on conspiracy theorists and sovereign citizens ...are they all crazy or only the ones that I have encountered or read about?
