Good day all,

just curious, if there is anybody in Sydney doing visual observation of night sky with a telescope (of any kind) equipped with a (real time) night vision device? Like, only as a guiding example, AGM PSV-7

To clarify, in my post I am not interested in astrography, not in near real time electronically enhanced astronomy. I am interested only in real time night vision.

Thank you, J

I looked into it a few years back and from what I could tell you couldn’t legally get those kinds of NV devices into Australia for some reason so unless something has changed in the last 5 or so years I’d suggest not many people in Aus would have much experience with it.

Atmos,

I am aware of the past legality issue in US. However these days there is number of AU providers for advanced night visions devices as well as import of parts and diy route should be possible.

Hence I would imagine, particularly considering urban light pollution, like Sydney, there would be (relatively) quite a few people, who would explore that route.

But, it looks I am either wrong or this forum cover very small % of astronomy fans in AU.

I doubt that there are very many NVD users at all in Oz. I’m a member of three Astro societies and have attended several others and have yet to see a single NV device in use …
I thought about getting a device but really prefer chasing faint fuzzies in the traditional way with my 18” and 5” scopes..

Xalasnave,

who is "the troll" that supposed to "hate you" and what rational process flow lead you to that conclusion?

With 18'' you surely can chase faint objects. But if you would have only 5'' (or around) , would not NV or even near real time electronic assistance in light polluted areas be a valid alternative or enhancement?
