I’m selling a new Ostahowski Optics 16” f/5 (2” thick Pyrex) mirror set, including 3.1” elliptical diagonal, to suit an ATM Newtonian telescope.
I ordered / purchased this set in September 2011, the primary mirror has never actually been removed from the shipping box it arrived in. I got a fair way along building the telescope but stopped work on it some years ago & am just now accepting I probably won’t get around to completing it! It's a shame, but that mirror is a work of art & deserves to be getting used. While the shipping box hasn’t been opened in at least 7 years, both the primary & diagonal mirrors have some minor dust settled on them so will need to be properly washed or blown clean.
Images show the mirror test results as conducted by Terry Ostahowski. Terry has suggested he’d charge USD$4000 (just over AUD$6000) for the same mirror set these days.
I’m looking to get AUD$4500 (plus shipping as required). It's heavy (around 12kg I think) so would need a courier rather than Aust Post I think, or local pickup in Willunga, South Australia. I'm happy to transport it myself within 100km.
I can include the telescope parts as they stand (refer images). The rocker/mirror box are finished, with the parts for the secondary cage still needing assembly. All parts are CNC routed Hoop Pine Marine Ply, based on my own design. All fixing points are pre-drilled. I sourced authentic Ebony Star Laminex with Teflon pads for the Alt & Az bearings & it moves very nicely. MoonLite 1” truss tube ball & socket brackets are included, plus a bunch of stainless-steel hardware to finish it off. I would provide all the info I have on the design – I modelled it in 3D so have the dimensions available. Or you might chose to use some of the parts as a starting point & build from there. I'll even throw in the two Dob building bibles I used ('The Dobsonian Telescope' by Kreige/Berry & 'Engineering, Design and Construction of Portable Newtonian Telescopes' by Highe).
To complete the scope you’d need the following…
Focuser (and eyepieces)
Secondary Spider
Viewfinder
1” dia truss tubes (6 off)
Mirror Cell – I have the specifications for an 18 point aluminium cell to suit this mirror, I just never had it made. The mirror box has threaded inserts already fitted to accommodate the cell. There are proprietary cells available, you would just need to ensure it can be fitted within this mirror box.
The altitude bearings have been centre-punched on one side to allow for an Argo Navis controller system if desired.
I can advise on which brand/specs of these parts I’d planned to use.
If anyone has any questions or would like specific photos, don't hesitate to ask. Note the images are quite poor due to file size restrictions - I can email better photos if anyone wants them.
