Researchers at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia and at Sumitomo
Electric Industries in Japan have developed a groundbreaking multicore optic fiber
that can transmit an astonishing 1.7 petabits per second (that's 213 terabytes per second)
while remaining compatible with existing fiber infrastructure.

The fiber contains 19 cores, the highest practical number for standard cladding
diameter fiber, maintaining good quality transmission. The random
arrangement of cores allows for increased spatial density and data capacity.
The use of standard cladding enables compatibility with current
optical components and mass-production methods.
