Can anyone confirm that the Great Red Spot is either just before or just after the meridian just now (depending on which way the planet is rotating!)
If so, I've just had my first ever confirmed sighting of it! The seeing is pretty good in Sydney just now. Fingers crossed for even better in a couple of hours when Joop gets higher in the sky.

No sorry Morton, according to SN Pro it won't start to appear until around 11.30pm.
This is what it looks like ATM.
SN is notoriously bad when it comes to the GRS.
Right now it's approaching the limb, soon to disappear.

hmmmm astro calc said it transitted at around 8:43
and http://www.acquerra.com.au/astro/software/jupiter.html
says 8:33, so i think you are right.
I have always found Starry night to be at least 2 hours out
mmmm yeah you're right, I just checked with "Jupiter 2" and that's what it says.
Back when I was imaging Joop and using SN I seem to remember a big time lag too.
I wondered at the time if it was actually showing me what joop looked like right then but it didn't take into account that light takes approx 43 minutes to arrive to earth.

You can fix this by updating your JupiterGRS.txt located in
:\Starry Night Pro Plus 6\Sky Data\JupiterGRS.txt
I have attached a copy to this post. There was a problem a while ago
about this file updating from Imagenova's updates. Or you can open the
file and see if the entry is the same as mine which is "284.0" I'm not sure
if this number is still pefectly correct, but the GRS transits the meridian
around the time everyone else has mentioned.

Thanks for the info Rob, much appriciated.
I'll do that asap.

Andrew,
What version SN do you have?
The fix I mentioned above is only for versions 6.0.1-6.0.4
If you are using any of the previous versions including 6.0.0
then the number in that file should 120.0 as that is about the
current latitude for the GRS
regards,CS
Ah thanks Rob, I've got v5.8.2
EDIT: I've just replaced the value to 120.0 and gone back to the time and date in question and it does show the GRS in transit as it should have appeared, so thank you very much Rob and my appologies to Morton.
:)
