Partial Solar Eclipse imaged approx 1 hour ago, from Melbourne at 1330 20APR2023. You can see some sunspots and some solar surface detail through some very thin cloud creating a smokey appearance . Images cropped significantly from full frame.

Nikon D750 with Nikkor 1000mm f/11 Lens single exposure at 1/500 s ISO 100 fitted with Thousand Oaks Solar filter. Fixed tripod no tracking.

It was a last minute decision to setup for the eclipse, with plenty of should haves, so I was pleasantly surprised to pickup some sunspot and vague surface detail on this single exposure. It interests me to try further with video technique stacking and maybe some proper prep (and dare I say it battery charging, camera checks for RAW, not jpeg and cable checking - yikes).

Fantastic to see you could capture it! Nothing but thick cloud here in Sydney so a bit disappointed

Thx Dave. I'm sorry Sydney didn't turn on a show for you, I fully expected Melbourne wouldn't only to be greeted with a clear Melbourne sky from around 0800. Just after the eclipse in clouded over somewhat. Good timing.

As a side note:
I almost tried the MTO 1100, which we both have, but unfortunately didn't get to use it, due to some mounting issues that I'd forgotten about until the very last minute. Purely out of interest, when I get some time, I will do a Head to Head comparison of the MTO 1100 and Nikkor 1000mm on a distant daytime target.

As you know, both my MTO and Rubinar are modified (glass relax procedure (https://www.strickling.net/russentonne.htm)).
The difference before-after was pretty dramatic on stars, but I suspect on terrestrial target it would be less noticeable, due to atmosphere instability at low elevations..

I don't know about Nikkor, but my Rubinar is better now than MTO (again, on stars).. so you can expect the same when comparing Nikon and MTO.
