Anyone who has any link to Maritime History will be shocked to learn the 'Cutty Sark' the last Tea Clipper, which was in dry dock in Greenwich, England, has been destroyed by fire, possibly deliberately lit.

Another bit of history gone.

Cheers

Oh dear! That is certainly a loss to History. Not good.

Possibly deliberatley lit!!! Even worse.
I was fascinated by paintings of the Cutty Sark when I was very young! She was a magnificent example of fine craftsmenship and beautiful detail.

To remember the old girl, here are 2 pics and a painting of her.

:mad2: This news has turned my stomach. I used to build models of the Cutty Sark as a kid and have always loved it as a fabulous ship that it was.

If it was deliberaty lit, I that hope they find these *******s and dissect them on an operating table to find out what makes people like these tick.

It appears that although it was badly damaged, it wasn't a write-off. You can go to the following webpage and help out if you are interested:

Terrible, terrible news.

A sad loss, seeing tall ships like that is a real living link with history. I hope they are able to salvage something from it.

What a sad, tragic loss, she was one of my favourites, as I too loved to build models of her and other famous ships.
What a waste when these things are done deliberately.

What a sick abominable thing to do.
Dissection is too good for them. I have a beautiful painting of the Cutty Sark - it has been hanging on our wall for as long as I can remember. I have also seen her at Greenwich.
All I can hope is that they fixed up Windsor Castle, after that devastating fire and with our great maritime tradition, they will fix up the Cutty Sark.

I had the opportunity to visit Windsor after the full restoration and it was marvellous result. They brought artisans from far and wide to do the job and the results were spectacular. I expect that, if the funds are available, they will do the same here and it'll become even more greatly loved and visited.

Very sad - saw it in 2005 along with the "Victory" in Portsmouth. Both were great.

Very sad news, hopefully she can be fully restored and remain part of Britains proud maritime history. Hope the security is doubled around HMS Victory

To go with the pic I posted earlier of the aerial shot of the burnt out Cutty Sark, here is one from Google Earth before the burn-out!

If you want to have a look at it, go to 'Greenwich' in Google Earth. It is on display down next to the river

My wife is in England at the moment and I phoned her up last nite. She said that the buzz around town is that it was an inside job - ie contractor late, no money etc.. Wicked. :mad2:

If anything happened to the Victory - wow - that would put Britain on a war footing I reckon.
