Is the Andromeda Galaxy visible from Australia??

If so, when is the best time of year to view it??

Cheers, Paul.

I`ll ask that question again.

My maps show that it is visible from Australia but it looks close to the horizon.

The question I should have asked is,
Is the Andromeda Galaxy EASILY visible from Australia or is it a hard target to aquire????

Cheers.

Paul, at your latitude you'll have no trouble seeing it. Later in the year is best, say in October-November when it will rise reasonably high where you are. But you'll have good views before and after that. And a great sight it is too!!

At 42.7degs North it is easely visible from Brisbane -27.30degs it can get reasonably high and is a naked eye object.
From the light poluted climes of the Gold Coast it might be hard to see,but if you go to a dark site like Leyburne it is an easy target.
I think it gets upto about 25degs above the horizon from my location in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

Hello Paul,
Yes you can see the Andromeda galaxy and easily. Although I am blessed with quite dark skies from my home. It rises to about 20 deg. above the northern horizon during November and December and can be seen with naked eye and easily with binoculars, (tripod recomended though). Through the telescope with a wide FOV lens it is amazing. Definatly something to look forward to.

We get to see it for about 1 month each year way down here in Southern Victoria!

We all had a good gawk at it at Camp last November. Very nice sight, but quite low on the Horizon for us.

Yes absolutely, you should be able to see Andromeda when it's up but you need clear northerly horizons.
Although it's low, it's a beautiful sight and actually surprisingly larger than I expected.
I was able to image it last year from my back yard even though it was only 8 deg above the horizon !

I've seen Andromeda from light polluted Sydney in my ETX90 scope

I pick up Andromeda naked eye from the mountains. Much better through the scope even though its so low.

I was at Alfords Point (south of Bankstown) looking north across the city (worst direction for light pollution). It was fairly low in the horizon, maybe just 15 or 20 degrees above the horizon, I'm not quite sure This was 4 or 5 years ago that I spotted it from there, I dont have a view north from my place and I was at a friends place at the time.

Never seen it but certainly will be trying to image it later in the year, by the way RB, that is a great image you have of it.

Thank you Leon, appreciate your comment.

I fell in love with M31 when I first saw it through my bino's and vowed I'd image it one day.
I'll be having a better look at it again this season.
