Hi, I am in need of some advice. I am considering purchasing an Evostar 72ed with Orion field flattener on Astro buysell.

Interested in the Evostar for the wider fov, I know this is an entry level scope but reviews are great and looks like a solid piece of kit.

I should mention I currently have a ed80 paired with a 533mc and just love it! I was initially looking at getting a SW 0.85 reducer/flattener but like the 72ed for the wider fov and faster f ratio.

So, my concern lies with the Orion flattener, has anyone used the Orion flattener with either the ed80 or 72ed, all my research points to it being okay and the seller who has been fantastic in sharing info and images taken with the scope and ff assures they play well together. Any feedback on the Orion ff would be great.

I have the whole kit including not just the orion flattener but also the skywatcher .85 flattener they all work very well together most of my wide images (not the most recent) were taken with the ed 72 they are on these forums


I will be putting them all up for sale soon if you might be interested

Almost the same as Nik - I have the SW 0.85 reducer/flattener and it works a treat with "large" sensor cameras such as DSLRs to stamp out the distorted stars.

At the moment, most of my targets are small enough to fit into the reducerless FoV. Big targets like the Rosette and Eta Carina Nebula do need the reducer.

Can't speak for the Orion item, though.

Without the flattener you will get elongated stars at the edges.

Also the 72 version is made with the cheaper glass than its big brothers. So except some CA. But they are good value for the $$$!

What Nik said. Although I am finding that with the ASI183, I am seeing only a fraction of the elongation compared to the DSLR. I am putting that down to the much smaller sensor size, unless anyone has a better answer?
